We were pleased, at the beginning of the year, to work together with the Math department on their FST statistics project. To help students with the project, we created a statistics Class Guide, introduced it to students in the classroom, and we've been helping students one-on-one as well. If you need help with a class project, please don't hesitate to contact us! Stay tuned to the newsletter for a libary lesson signup form!

Behind the Statistics "Statistical data is rightly seen as a central feature of much psychological research, but students need to understand the important methodological processes underpinning the production of such data. In this film, we go Behind the Statistics to look at the various factors -- from sampling techniques, through ideas about correlation and causation to experimental design -- that can influence the reliability and validity of statistical data." -CVOD Click on the image to the left for access to this video!

| | "Both George Orwell and Winston Churchill came close to death in the mid-1930's--Orwell shot in the neck in a trench line in the Spanish Civil War, and Churchill struck by a car in New York City. If they'd died then, history would scarcely remember them. At the time, Churchill was a politician on the outs, his loyalty to his class and party suspect. Orwell was a mildly successful novelist, to put it generously. No one would have predicted that by the end of the 20th century they would be considered two of the most important people in British history for having the vision and courage to campaign tirelessly, in words and in deeds, against the totalitarian threat from both the left and the right. In a crucial moment, they responded first by seeking the facts of the matter, seeing through the lies and obfuscations, and then they acted on their beliefs. Together, to an extent not sufficiently appreciated, they kept the West's compass set toward freedom as its due north." -Goodreads | | |

| | "This Hugo Award-winning graphic novel chronicles the fall from grace of a group of super-heroes plagued by all-too-human failings. Along the way, the concept of the super-hero is dissected as the heroes are stalked by an unknown assassin. One of the most influential graphic novels of all time and a perennial best-seller, Watchmen has been studied on college campuses across the nation and is considered a gateway title, leading readers to other graphic novels such as V for Vendetta, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and The Sandman series." -Goodreads Note - This book is not available in ebook or audiobook format. We know that many of you are as excited about these films as we are; and because of their informational aspects, you’d like to show them in an educational setting -- e.g., in the classroom, at the next meeting of your community group, with your book club, etc. Consequently, we will permit one-time educational screenings of any of the documentaries noted with this information, on the following terms: | | |
