April 2023

Spring has sprung!

Everywhere I look I see evidence that the long winter sleep has finally come to an end. The heavy rain washed away the last of the snow, revealing spiky hyacinth and tulip leaves poking through the ground. I've also noticed the rhubarb beginning to grow, and my cluster of chives is already tall enough to be picked. Plus, the neighbourhood is full of bunnies, which we often see scampering about on our early morning walks. I love these early signs of spring, and the promise of so much more to come. As an added bonus, the cedar waxwings returned this week to the crabapple tree for some tasty berries still clinging to the branches. But the best surprise was my snowdrops...

Surprising Snowdrops

During a warm spell in late February, I was surprised to see my snowdrops in full bloom. It had to be the earliest I'd ever seen them come up, let alone bloom, in our north-facing garden.

March came in like a lion, bringing heavy snow a foot deep, which stayed the entire month. With dismay, I believed it would take the luck o' the Irish for these blooming beauties to survive.

When April cried and washed away the last of the snow, imagine my surprise when the snowdrops reappeared, completely unscathed and taller and hardier than ever before. Pretty lucky indeed!

New Website URL

In 2015, my sister and I attended a workshop in Milton to learn how to build a free website to showcase our artwork, and students from Humber College would be on hand to help us. The 22-year old student from Colombia who had been assigned to help me out, spoke perfect English and was able to guide me with effortless ease. I would be forever grateful to him for his help, especially when I left the 2-hour session with a functioning website, one that would serve me well over the many years since.

However, it seems the time has come for me to upgrade, especially when I noticed that I had come dangerously close to running out of free storage space.

My new website URL is: www.tinaclancyart.com

Perhaps an apt time of year for brave, new beginnings!

My daughter surprised me this week when she sent me this gorgeous little gem of a poem. It certainly has made me ponder what-came-before-that-which-has-become.

The Big Bang

There was no up, there was no down, there was no side to side.
There was no light, there was no dark, or light of any kind.
There were no stars, or planet Mars, or protons to collide.
There was no up, there was no down, there was no side to side.
And furthermore, to underscore this total lacking state… there was no here, there was no there, because there was no space!
And in this endless void that can’t be thought of as a place, there was no time and so no passing minutes, hours, days.
Of all the paradoxes that belabour common sense, I think this one’s the greatest, this time before events; because how did we get from nothing to infinitely dense?
From immeasurably small, to inconceivably immense?
But before we get unmoored from the question at the start, let’s take a breath and marvel at when math becomes an art.
Because we don’t have to understand it to know there was a time, when there was no up, there was no down, there was no side to side.

Coming in May ...

Mother's Day, many family celebrations, and more.

My plans for the rest of April are spring-inspired: feeding the family an Easter feast, golfing as soon as the courses open, joining in a new, weekly paint-along, and playing with my dog in the backyard (which means watching him sniff around and "christen" the low shrubs as they reawaken while I do a bit of tidying). Oh, and it goes without saying that I will get into the studio and see where the brushes and paints take me. Up or down, side to side, far or near, I've yet to see.

The neighbourhood bunnies and I wish you a Happy Easter, and continued health and happiness... Tina
