Featuring a series of photographs drawn directly from entries in the 2023 Victorian Architecture Awards, this is a rare opportunity to experience recent innovative work by Victorian architects, from design at a residential scale through to the delivery of architecture for education and projects that respond to the urban and public realm. As judging takes place across the categories, this is an exhibition that offers the public a chance to view work by those directly shaping the places where we live, work, learn, and play.

Eat it Before it Melts

Kayla May

to 26 March 2023

A bite of our favorite childhood ice cream transports each of us to a unique and ephemeral place. From a Bubble O’Bill on the beach to a Gaytime in grandma's backyard. Ice cream dripping down your hand is a reminder of times passed and an urgent call to the present, to eat it before it melts.

An aspiring group of talented photographers got together and in less time than it takes do most things we have created an amazing exhibition. A feast for the frontal lobes. Not to be missed. Resolve is a state of mind as well as a verb to be abused every New Year.

Pattern Recognition

Craig Martin

to 2 April 2023

Shot throughout the course of the monotonous day-to-day and casting aside preconceptions of subject matter, Pattern Recognition invites the viewer to bear witness to the prosaic nature of 21st century life. Of a world more connected than at any point in history and yet, ironically, more divided than ever. Of the competitive, lightning pace at which we are ever increasingly asked to live our lives and the impermanent and, often, vacuous ways our self-expression manifests itself.

Permanent Society

Colin Mowbray

to 2 April 2023

Permanent Society is an exploration of the idea of language as a form of communication that transcends time and place. I capture random words, pieces of text, and signs found in various locations around the world, creating a visual narrative removed from their original context. Each image invites the viewer to consider the broader cultural, historical, and social significance of these messages seemingly sent as commandments by an omnipotent god or left behind by a lost civilization.

Here's What We Know

Rebecca McCauley & Aaron Claringbold

to 2 April 2023

Consider the telegraph poles, tracing a path walked for a very long time: adorned now with 5g transmitters. The vernacular of the powerlines and the boreholes, and the satellite mapping software that charts our course. How the distance between here and there has shrunk to the size of a holiday, or a weekend away.

Radical Utopia

21 Feb - 27 May 2023

Melbourne in the 1980s was the site for new ideas to emerge, bend and transform the city, making its mark in post-modern design and media. Radical Utopia: an archaeology of a creative city explores the ways design and activism shaped the innovative cultural city we know today.

Radical Utopia focuses on the studios, places, and spectacles of Melbourne where design was fiercely debated and produced. Surveying nightclubs, fashion parades, architecture media, gaming labs, graphic design collectives and everything in-between, Radical Utopia provides a map of the cultural infrastructure of the city and inner suburbs

Very long exhibitions in museums.

We will include a photo in the month we find them, then list.

Tours de Force: Entertainers on the Front Line

to October 2023

Since the Vietnam War, Australian entertainers have performed for troops on the front line in war and peacekeeping operations. Their talent and celebrity have lifted spirits and brought a slice of home to service personnel abroad.

In this special exhibition, stories, memorabilia and rare photos and videos tell the stories of entertainers on the front line spanning Lorrae Desmond, Normie Rowe and Lucky Starr to Kylie Minogue, John Farnham and Lehmo. It also explores the mission, operations and experiences of the people who have facilitated these successful tours.

Spy: Espionage in Australia

until 2023

This exhibition from the National Archives of Australia reveals the personal experiences of secret agents and the curious history of espionage and counter-espionage in Australia. Developed in partnership with ASIO.

Often cloaked in myth, the stories of spies are sometimes stranger than fiction. Spy: espionage in Australia reveals the personal experiences of secret agents and the curious history of espionage and counter-espionage in Australia, from Federation through to the present day. Visit this popular exhibition to see surveillance images and watch candid interviews with ASIO Officers. Spy brings the stories of spies out of the shadows and into the light.

An ode to the punks and powerful women of St Kilda

Madeline Bishop

to 1 May 2023

Madeline Bishop is a Melbourne based artist whose work is conceptually centred around relational dynamics. Exploiting the persistent tension between distance and closeness in photographs, Bishop’s work uses a performative and constructed approach to dissecting the relationship between photography and intimacy.

100 faces

Portraits from Collections.

to 16 April 2023

Through the lenses of over 50 artists, 100 faces brings together 100 works drawn from three photographic collections to explore the portrait in its many forms, as well as what it means to collect portraiture both publicly and privately.

This exhibition draws from two private Melbourne collections, belonging to the Harris and Rosenthal families. Works from these collections have been placed in conversation with our significant public collection to reveal a rich diversity of faces. From celebrities and cultural figures to anonymous individuals caught unawares on the street, this exhibition features works by major Australian and international artists.

This Map links up all the St Kilda and other southern galleries for you for great drive. Note check what time the spaces are open before leaving.

Weather: Nature's Beauty and Fury

Various

to 2 April 2023

This will be much more than just an exhibition of sunrises and sunsets, although I'm sure there will be a few of those. It is about showing nature at its best and worst, from early morning fog or the beauty of the rainbow, to floods, droughts, storms, dust storms, lightning and all manner of wild weather.

As Ansel Adams once famously said: "There is no such thing as bad weather for photography. Only different weather."

2022 Nikon-Walkey Press Photography

THE LIGHT FADES BUT THE GODS REMAIN

BILL HENSON

11 March to 25 June 2023

The light fades but the gods remain is a major exhibition showcasing two key series by Bill Henson, one of Australia’s most eminent artists. These explore the suburb of Glen Waverley, where the artist grew up. In celebration of MGA’s 25th anniversary, Henson was commissioned to revisit the suburb of his childhood and to produce a new body of work reflecting upon his earlier series Untitled 1985–86, known by many as ‘the suburban series’. This ground-breaking commission offers an unparalleled insight into one of Australia’s most revered artists as he explores the notion of home, intensifying the everyday to a point of dramatic revelation and romantic beauty.
