Delis, dating, and dates ... for upcoming events! |
Hello! "I'll Have What She's Having" is my subject line and the name of a Jewish deli exhibit I visited this morning —I share more about that below. There may have been some shandahs ... you can be the judge! In the movie the famous line is from, "When Harry Met Sally...," Meg Ryan confides in Billy Crystal's character about her love life. I confide in my grandmother. But due to our generational differences, some of the details are lost in translation. See a doodle about that below! Plus, see the comedy poster I created for my sister's show and upcoming events! <3 Enjoy! If you're new here, hi! I'm Danielle, a marketer, writer, and artist doodling about her life (@danielleindoodles) and Jewish things (@jewsindoodles). This newsletter, sent most Sundays, has new cartoons and updates on what I'm working on in both worlds. I love producing this newsletter and appreciate you following along! |

Talking to my grandma about dating |
My grandma loves to ask about my love life. I made this cartoon a few weeks ago to show what it's like talking to her about dating in a way that she understands and allows her to still, well, love me. Can you relate? |

Hold the lox please at the NY Historical Society Deli Exhibit |

I joined a synagogue group to finally see the deli exhibit, "I'll Have What She's Having" — whilst very hungover. Is that a mitzvah or a shandah? Although, you'd never know in the picture of me below as a sweet little blintz. |

The exhibit itself is a mitzvah!! (Except for the poster with top Yiddish words omitting the word shandah!) It was cute and touching and another reminder of how resilient the Jews are. Many delis were started by immigrants and Holocaust survivors. So many delis have closed, so it makes the ones that are still here even more meaningful. |

It was also cool to see a beautifully curated exhibit depicting places and experiences that have been part of my life. For example, Ben's Deli was featured in the exhibit. When I was a teenager, Ben's opened in my neighborhood, and we were so excited to have a good spot for Jewish food. Then in 2015, I had too much Ben's. When my mom died people brought food from there over almost daily during shiva. The teachers from our school noticed we liked it, so they gave us a $400 Ben's gift card. It was kind of hilarious and took me over 3 years to use up, lasting from me living at home to me moving to the city, culminating in me eating matzah ball soup alone at their midtown location — ready to move forward with my life. Anyway ... I recommend you go to the exhibit! Unlock those memories! My only complaint is that it was pretty crowded and there was no deli food to actually eat. And when you're done, go up to the fourth floor for a vibe switch at the interesting Salem witch trial exhibit. |

Drawing comedians for my sister |
My very own sister, Julia, used to work at Carolines on Broadway, (which just closed, RIP). She moved to LA over a year ago and teamed up with her former coworker to produce a comedy show at a cool 70s-themed venue in Malibu. She had a vision for the poster and challenged me to draw all the comedians ... with their hands (I typically avoid hands)! We both love how it came out so much that I booked a last-minute ticket to go to the show on Wednesday. Look out for more Brody collabs <3 |

I'm almost out of Mitzvah or Shandah games (get it here while supplies last). The Shalom Shoppe is now selling them and sold out of the first round of inventory I sent. I'm rethinking the rules thanks to everyone who's been playing, especially Jonathan who generously took the time to get on a call with me. If you have feedback, please feel free to share! I'm going to get started on Don't Fu-Haggadah-boudit 3.0 and work on expanding my events. I just submitted a grant with my sister to bring MItzvah or Shandah Live to Montreal (she lives there), so wish us luck! Doodles! 👋 Danielle |
