Greetings CCCHS Members, I don’t know how you feel, but lately it seems like just about everything is a fight – or at least a little extra work and more complicated for the bare minimum. It’s not just at work or at home, but it’s everywhere. I constantly need to advocate for myself, my family, and those impacted by my programs. It’s a struggle every step of the way. Some days (or in reality most days) I’m physically and emotionally spent. Is anyone else with me? Serendipitously, the majority of our CCCHS programming for the month of October is really focused on advocacy and how we can better use our voices and take care of ourselves. I’m excited about our line-up because, let’s be honest, I need it. If you are struggling a little bit like me, I hope you can also take advantage of these free membership benefits. Next week at our Wednesday Membership Meeting, Lunch with Legislators, our members have the opportunity to advocate in one of the most common and purest ways. Our local elected officials will be at Calvary Church to listen to US and our concerns. It’s empowering and I hope you will make every effort to attend, ask questions, and listen to what our panelists have to say about issues close to home. On Friday afternoon (October 8), we are hosting our annual Self-Care Workshop virtually with Annie Mascelli. Attendees will learn how to create a more relaxed and calm day-to-day life and get strategies to make lasting change. It’s not too late to register and we encourage you to share this workshop with your colleagues and friends. Our toolkits can all use a little refresher and Annie’s approach to the afternoon will be the perfect way to end the work week. Finally, on October 29 we will be collaborating with ACAP for our virtual fall conference on Advocacy: How to Use Your Voice. Although we’ve been planning this conference for almost a year, the timing couldn’t be any better. The free training will focus on what exactly advocacy is and how we can advocate more effectively for ourselves, our loved ones, and our consumers. I hope you are equally as excited as I am for our member benefits this month. As always, if you have other training ideas or opportunities, please feel free to reach out to our board members anytime. With Warmest Regards, Melissa Bottorf CCCHS President PA Link to ADRC |

Volunteers Needed! Centre County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Prison Society |
The Centre County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Prison Society (PPS) is seeking a few dedicated volunteers to become Official Visitors, or Prison Monitors, in nearby prisons: SCI Benner, SCI Rockview, and the Centre County Correctional Facility. The PPS has been in existence since 1787 with a mission of seeking humane prison conditions. It is the oldest non-profit organization in the country dedicated to sensible and humane criminal justice. Today the Society responds to the concerns of incarcerated people and their families, provides assistance to individuals returning home from incarceration, and advocates for systemic policy change. The cornerstone of the Society's work is a network of volunteers, known as Official Visitors, or Prison Monitors. Thanks to Pennsylvania law, the Prison Society is authorized to empower these individuals to privately visit any person incarcerated in a state or county prison or jail in the Commonwealth. Visits today can be accomplished in-person or virtually by video or phone. US Mail and email options are also available. If you are interested, please find the application to become an Official Visitor on the PPS website at and/or contact Janet Irons (ironsjanetc@gmail.com) or Mark Frailey (chiefmf01@yahoo.com) to learn more. |

Join us online for the 2021 ACAP Caregiver Symposium Caring and Coping: When a Loved One Has Dementia November 5th, 2021 1:00 PM - 4:15 PM via Zoom Featuring Teepa Snow! |
More than 5 million people in the US have some form of dementia. Knowing there can be lots of challenges in caring for someone with dementia, and coping with the demands can be difficult for families and caregivers, ACAP is offering a free, virtual symposium, “Caring and Coping: When a Loved One Has Dementia.” The symposium will help families and professionals who interact with people who have dementia learn how to better care for the person and cope with the inherent challenges. Symposium attendees will learn about the many forms of dementia and what happens with brain changes, become aware of recent research findings, and gain practical tips for a positive approach to interacting with and caring for a loved one or client with dementia. Teepa Snow, one of the world’s leading advocates and educators for dementia and other forms of brain change, is our symposium speaker. She is back by popular demand from last year’s symposium attendees. With over 40 years of rich and varied clinical and academic experiences as an occupational therapist, educator, and in-demand speaker, Teepa combines engaging stories, real-life experiences, compassionate humor and practical tips to help attendees gain greater understanding of dementia, increase their knowledge about reasons people with brain change do what they do and learn ways to care for a loved one or care recipient who has dementia. Registration for the free symposium has begun! Click the button below to sign up today. |

CSIU Migrant Education Program My name is Luke Duceman and I work on behalf of the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Migrant Education Program. Along with the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit (CSIU) we offer free supplemental educational services and programs to eligible families and their students in 27 northeastern and central Pennsylvania counties, including yours. We seek to help this particular student population through customized tutoring, in-home instruction, after-school programming, leadership development, summer campus programming, parent involvement, and ESL instruction if necessary. Our teachers lend support to bridge that gap. One of the quickest and most effective ways to provide these supports is to collaborate with local community organizations, build partnerships, and locate these families and students. Since you are a local organization of particular interest, we would like to discuss working with you in order to identify more qualifying families in the local area. I have attached a quick fact sheet with more information about our program for your convenience. Please contact me at your earliest convenience via this email address (lduceman@csiu.org) or my cell phone (570) 933-0236. I look forward to hearing from you.
