Houston Alumnae Association SEPTEMBER 2021 NEWSLETTER |

Kindly Hearts is a year-long campaign focused on service and fundraising to support our local communities. The Campaign will run during the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters. As much of the US and the world continues to cope with, and seek to recover from, the COVID-19 pandemic, Alpha Xi Delta is galvanizing our membership around this shared experience and deploying our time, talents and treasures to serve our local communities that are in need. To support the Kindly Hearts Campaign, Alpha Xi Delta chapters and alumnae associations create project plans within one or more of the following areas of focus: supporting students, food insecurity, and basic needs shortages.
The Kindly Hearts Campaign will be the Fraternity’s focus for the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters. An announcement of a permanent philanthropic focus will be made prior to the fall 2022 semester.
The Houston Alumnae Association of Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity is excited to announce that we have chosen Casa de Esperanza de los Ninos of Houston as our focus for the Kindly Hearts Campaign. Casa de Esperanza de los Ninos strives to break the cycle of child abuse and neglect for at-risk infants, children and their families by providing comprehensive residential and family support programs that transform people and communities. |
|
When Casa de Esperanza first opened, the plan was to provide a safe place for families in crisis to leave their children until the crisis was resolved, at which time the family would take their children home to a safer, more stable environment. Since then Casa de Esperanza has cared for over 4,000 children and their families.
Casa de Esperanza provides safety, hope, and a home to children whose families are affected by domestic violence, substance abuse, poverty, homelessness and mental illness. Children ages birth to six years are admitted. Referrals are received from family shelters, hospitals, and Children's Protective Services.
Since admitting the first HIV exposed child in 1986, Casa de Esperanza has remained committed to including children affected by HIV/AIDS in its mission of providing hope and a home to children in crisis. At Casa de Esperanza these children are cared for like all others.
We will be announcing plans for a facility tour, community play date, basic needs drive, chili cook-off and more! So watch your emails and read your newsletters to learn about all of the in-person and remote ways that you can help make a difference in the lives of these local area children. Houston Autism Speaks Walk Saturday, October 16th
Pom-poms, balloon arches, community fun, and purpose - the Autism Speaks Walk is back, and better than ever.
What makes the 2021 Walk even better? It has something for everyone! In addition to coming together in-person to help create a world where all people with autism can reach their full potential, the Walk will retain the fun, remote-participation options introduced last year. Your safety is top priority — and no matter how you choose to participate, your support will be recognized and celebrated. Our community is stronger together, and we can’t wait to celebrate one another and the amazing impact we are making together for people with autism and their families. Whether near or far, let’s rally together on Walk day! Sisters! You are invited to join our Walk Team here: http://act.autismspeaks.org/goto/HoustonAXiDAlumnae Whether you plan to attend in-person on Walk Day or participate virtually, you are welcome! |

Our first-ever virtual National Convention was held June 25-27. It was a robust virtual experience that left attendees feeling inspired and excited for the future, all from the comfort of their own homes. Aside from the public recognition of our chapter from President Micaela Isler, other highlights of this year's convention were: Friday evening's keynote address - We Were Made for This! Presented by Tina VanSteenbergen; Saturday's State of the Sorority address followed by educational sessions - Walking into Wellbeing: Sustainable Ways to Make Each Day Awesome; So, You Were in a Sorority? Correction, we ARE in a sorority; no past tense here!; and, Stop Apologizing: Let Your Confidence Shine! And, if you haven't heard already, all proposed legislation, initiation ceremony updates and the National Council, Foundation and NHC slates were approved. ttps://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLSc5Llo2zTBhf0.../viewform Edit 55 |

Houston Alumna Monica Schafer Broughton, BA '93, will serve as this year's Foundation Board Vice Chair. The Foundation Board is responsible for creating and sustaining the Foundation's mission, approving long range plans and ensuring financial solvency, managing resources, ensuring adequate resources and monitoring programs and services for consistency with the Foundation’s vision and goals. Outgoing National President Micaela Isler, BA 91 served as National President since 2017 and as a part of the National Council since 2013. She leaves a legacy having led our organization with integrity, respect and undivided attention to details. She worked hard to set high standards and served as a diligent problem solver. Ultimately, she inspired our sisterhood to dream bigger and do more than we ever thought possible. |
