May 2020 - Newsletter #9

April was a month with many challenges and so much more need out there. We like to thank our donors who have come through in supporting our extended family in need on the streets. You are true heroes and we are so grateful to you.

While the pandemic forces schools and businesses to close as well as everyone to stay home and off the streets, it compels FDDR, with greater urgency and determination, to remain serving 6 days a week. We even went out two Sundays on extra feeds, the first one was on Easter Sunday with a fantastic meal and surprises. The second Sunday was April 19 to celebrate our anniversary and our 60,000th meal served.

Yes with your never-ending support, FDDR was able to serve 60,000 meals in two years!

Thank you very, very much.

For all the new subscribers and viewers FDDR Feeding Detroit is a Non-Profit 501(c)3 organization whose goal is to help the less fortunate, the homeless, and the hungry members of our community. This includes the elderly, unemployed, underemployed, poor, and migrants – women, men, and children. We feed the hungry and assist in our humble way by providing them nourishment, clothing, and many things to keep them comfortable.

FDDR provides everyday meals at no cost to our less fortunate in the community and it is sustained by committed and compassionate volunteers as well as generous contributions of donors.

We do not receive any funding from the county, state, or federal governments. We are 100% funded by your donations.

We hold on to the belief that while we may not be able to help everyone, we will support as many individuals as we can.

Our mission is simple: to feed and help people in need on the streets of greater Detroit regardless of their circumstances.

We are making sure our staff is safe and healthy during this challenging time. A gift to this campaign will allow us to continue to serve the homeless and hungry. We are committed absolutely to keep serving those who turn to us for help, and who have no one else to care for them in this time of need.

FDDR & COVID-19

We know we already gave you the following information but find it important enough to share it again.

To combat the spread of COVID-19 in Michigan, Governor Whitmer signed the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order, it got extended to May 15. All Michigan businesses and operations must temporarily suspend in-person operations that are not necessary to sustain or protect life, and all Michiganders must stay in their homes unless they’re a part of that critical infrastructure workforce, engaged in an outdoor activity, or performing tasks necessary to the health and safety of themselves or their family, like going to the hospital or grocery store. The Governor also wants all to wear a facemask when going out to protect themselves and others, also try to keep 6 Ft distance whenever possible..

As a Non-Profit Charity, we are allowed to go out and serve the homeless and hungry!

As the pandemic unfolds, it’s imperative we do all we can to protect ourselves, our families and, those with low incomes, or anyone lacking support and a safety net or does not have a home.

For many, FDDR is their only source of food, their single source of survival.
Hunger does not take a break at times like this.

How bad would our hearts feel if we stopped serving the people? We have to feed them because people need this help, this bag of food to survive.

There is no time like the present.
We are activating emergency plans. FDDR operates on a shoestring, and now we face dramatically increased demand, plus we need more volunteers that can donate or cook for us.

A significant challenge is how to maintain services at a time when demand for emergency food aid is ever increasing. Even before the virus arrived, we were preparing for a possible surge in need stemming from planned cuts to federal food stamps and layoffs.

We work long hours every day to bring more food assistance to where it is needed most.
Every day we are pressed to find the surplus food, funds, and labor to maintain our food delivery.

FDDR needs your help now more than ever to fight the threats of hunger and pandemic.

Please — don’t wait until it’s too late. None of this can happen without the generosity of FDDR’s supporters. Please consider donating today!

We want to thank all of you for your support and donations these last few weeks. You are the reason we can do what we do, and it is an honor to serve our extended family six days a week.

We may periodically limit the quantity on certain items like clothing to ensure more people have access to the service they need.
Serving food is our #1 priority, and we will do whatever it takes to make sure it is safe for all.

Thank you very, very much
