Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) is an acronym and life philosophy
my dad taught me. When I founded my coaching business, it felt only natural to adopt PMA as its namesake.
But what exactly does PMA mean to me?
(in addition to my first tattoo someday ;)
Remember that book Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff, by Richard Carlson? It was first published in 1997 (the year I graduated college :) I was a teacher and was already getting into things like this way back then.
PMA is kind of like that but in all areas of life, small, big and in between.
It’s not about wearing rose colored glasses and ignoring the difficulties, it’s actually quite opposite. It’s resiliency when faced with obstacles and adversity. It’s trying to find the silver lining, the lesson or taking some time to reflect + reframe when challenges arise. It’s finding strength in vulnerability. It's about turning setbacks into possible opportunities.
Having PMA has brought light to dark moments and helped me get through some very hard times. It’s helped me to transform obstacles into stepping stones.
When things are going well it’s bottling up that optimism to reach for it when things get hard.
Everyday I practice PMA by being grateful, doing things that bring me joy and creating mini moments of calm and ease. Some days are easier to tap into it than others but those are the days where it helps us the most to come through it stronger than yesterday.
Plus, what other choice do we have really? Life is a gift.
Not sure where to start? I encourage you to start small, incorporating mini moments of positivity into your daily routine. Keep me posted! I’d love to hear how it goes for you or if you practice forms of it already would love to hear about that too!
