Día de los Muertos is a Mexican celebration on November 1st and 2nd. It is a joyful celebration to honor and remember family and friends who have died. For Día de los Muertos, ofrendas (altars) are put up at each home to honor and welcome the dead souls. Here the dead and the living can meet. A photo of the dead soul helps them find the correct altar as well as putting out their favorite food, drink, or important objects. Don’t forget to include candles to help show the way and to celebrate new life. (photo from Wikipedia)

Pan Muerto is one of the traditional parts of the Día de los Muertos celebration. I buy my Pan Muerto at my favorite local Mexican Bakery, Flores Bakery.

Here is a recipe if you want to try to make your own!

Sangria is one of my favorite drinks that comes from Spain. It is basically red wine with sliced fruit, optional liqueurs, juices, and sugar if you want. My recipe is a variation on this one from HJACOBY on allrecipes.

1 (750 milliliter) bottle dry red wine
1/3 cup frozen lemonade concentrate
1/3 cup orange juice
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup white sugar (Optional)
1 medium orange, sliced into rounds
1 medium lemon, sliced into rounds
1 medium lime, sliced into rounds

Gramática

In English once a sentence has a negative word, you cannot use any more negative words. No double negatives! In Spanish, once a sentence is negative, all words that can be, must be negative. Yes double or triple or even quadruple negatives! Taylor Swift sings, "We are never, ever, ever, ever getting back together". So in Spanish, "Nunca, nunca, nunca, nunca volvemos a estar juntos".

Maybe a more common example, "I don't have anything" is in Spanish, "No tengo nada".

Viajes

San Miguel de Allende in the state of Guanajuato is a wonderful colonial Mexican city for a visit or a study trip. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in July 2008.

Spend your time relaxing in the main plaza or park, or exploring the narrow streets, shops, and restaurants.

José Martí was Cuban poet and hero who worked and fought his entire life for Cuban independence from Spain. He died in battle fighting Spanish troops in 1895.

His famous poem Versos Sencillos, was turned into a song that has become a symbol of Cuba. Listen to Guantanamera at the link below.

Tecnología

My favorite App for learning and practicing Spanish verb conjugations is the ConjuGato App. I especially like the “Practice” feature where you can pick a tense, or multiple tenses, and quiz yourself. I suggest you see how well you know the verbs by just quickly tapping the screen to see the correct conjugations. At other times you can choose to type the answers and practice spelling.
