Our Newsletter - October 17, 2019

Happy Halloween!

Halloween is fast approaching, are you ready for the little ghosts and goblins? Are those bags of chocolates and candies calling to you as you enter the grocery store? If so, you are not alone, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF at nrf.com) the US population spends over 8 Billion dollars on Halloween. Most of that money is spent on candy. We don’t sell candy at SewGreen@Rochester, but if you stop in on October 31st you will get a little treat.

We hope you started your Halloween sewing, crochet, and knitting projects but if you haven’t you still have a little time. Sometimes we just can't decide on a costume until a few days before.

Our one-time Long Arm Quilting class on October 26th is full and will take place as scheduled from 2-4pm. Lorraine will teach you the basics of getting the quilt onto the frame, and other fundamentals of Long Arm quilting.

New on Thursdays

Just another good reason to stop by for Open Sewing.

  • Doug Potter, our machine repair person will be in on Thursdays from 11-2 for on the spot advice and repair at a very reasonable cost.

  • Georgia will be available for threading and machine operation help.

  • Sue is our knitting wiz Thursdays from 4-7. Need help reading a pattern? Mastering a new technique - no problem. Or just hang out with other knitters.

Rescued Fabric Finds a Home

Sometimes we rescue fabric and we know it will fly off the shelf. And other times we see novelty fabric and wonder if it will ever find a loving home, especially when it is seasonal. Well this funky Pilgrim hat fabric found a home quickly. It was sold to none other than our shop manager Anne's sister who is going to make something for her Mayflower Society  (descendants of theMayflower) Meeting.

Monthly Quilt Class

Linda had a great time showing Joy and Kay how to make the Whirlwind block in the Block of the month class on October 4th. In the image here you can see Joy and Kay's finished product. This design actually creates two blocks by using up the cutaway parts. The whirlwind blocks on the right and the cutaways created the blocks on the left.

Kitties and Pumpkins, oh my!

Carol made this cute little kitty cat hat using yarn from our shop. Oh the things you can make!

This festive pumpkin was made by a new retiree Cheryl who has joined our Wednesday Crochet Club! The Yarn is from SewGreen.

Upcoming Classes

Serger 101/201

October 22 from 11-1 and 4-6

Sergers can be a little intimidating but they are great sewing tools once you understand how to use and adjust them to suit your project!  In the 101 class, learn the basics of threading and tension.  For Serger 201, you've learned the basics but want to go further!  Bring your serger, or sit down at the shop sergers.  If you bring your own, don't forget your serger's manual and all its feet, too!

Hand Embroidery

October 28 from 11-1 and 4-6

Embrace the fading art of embroidery. From lazy daisy and feather stitches to French knots and blanket stitching, let's rediscover fine needlework together!

Quilt Block of the month

November 2 from 2-4

Join us each month or take the classes that fit your schedule!

In the next class you will learn to construct the "Hidden Walls" block shown here.  Linda created this block to give you an idea on how you can use dark and light fabrics, large and small prints to make this easy block look quite interesting.
