Art Trail puts Wivenhoe on National "10 best places to live" map!

The Wivenhoe Art Trail team are delighted to report that they have recently been approached by journalists from the Sunday Times. An article entitled ‘The Top Ten Places to Live in the UK’ highlights Wivenhoe and majored on the riverside town’s thriving creative community.

The editorial names Wivenhoe as the best place to live in the east of England 2024 where ‘art is at the heart of this picturesque town’ adding, ‘This picturesque fishing town and former smuggling hotspot, part way between Norwich and London, is bursting with architectural charm and artistic spirit.’ And goes on to say, ’There are two art galleries and during the summer the Nottage Maritime Institute holds art exhibitions and opens up its own museum collection of paintings, photographs and models. Many resident artists throw open their studio and workshop doors twice each year for the Wivenhoe Art Trail’. To read the full article click on the link below

The Art Trail is run on a not-for-profit basis, supporting established artists and emerging new talent, with the only stipulation being that all participating artists and makers live in Wivenhoe.

The breadth of media is always extensive, from ceramics of all types, paintings, prints, textiles, photography and collage, to name just a few. Each year sees us go from strength to strength, developing and growing in both variety and reach. It’s an ideal opportunity to see art and makers in action, purchase unique pieces and, above all, inspire and delight.

Wivenhoe has held a creative reputation since the 50’s - Francis Bacon, Dickie Chopping and Dennis Wirth-Miller, stalwarts of the notorious Wivenhoe Art Club, established a strong foundation. On your wanderings around the Art Trail you may even stumble across a recently erected blue plaque, drawing your attention to Francis Bacon’s studio in Queen’s Road.

This richly diverse hub, together with the town’s port and shipyard heritage, makes visiting the Art Trail a joy. The uniquely condensed array of studios and venues in its riverside location with marshland habitat, make this a visually rich event not to be missed. With its many pubs, cafes and hotels, visitors come from far and wide, often making a weekend of it.

The Art Trail has rapidly grown into an eagerly awaited twice-yearly event. This year boasts more than 40 artists and makers showing in over 30 studios and venues. A true celebration of creativity, all sited within a square mile of quaint streets of former boat builders’ and fishermen’s cottages.

Organisers, Jane Watson, Alison Stockmarr, Maureen Hume, Catherine Dodds, Isabelle Taylor-Jones, Lone Quist Edwards and Rosanna Gethin seek to improve the Art Trail each year and, in the spirit of keeping all things local, last year commissioned Noah Carter, Wivenhoe artist and professional videographer to produce the Wivenhoe Art Trail video – (link here) it’s an armchair view of what you can expect to see, showcases Wivenhoe at its creative best and can be viewed on our website.

The next Art Trail is 17 - 19 May, 10am - 5pm daily.
