Preservation Advocacy

The Lomb Mansion

The Pittsford community recently approved a major Capital Improvement Plan for the school district. As part of this plan, monies will be set aside to work on the exterior envelope of the building including windows, doors, and painting. The school district and Historic Pittsford are working together to assure the proper stewardship of work on this notable national landmark.

Completed in 1903, the Craftsman style mansion was built by Adolph Lomb for his wife. The exterior of the house is clad in sand colored Roman brick laid with very fine, narrow mortar joints. The house is one of the grandest Craftsman homes ever built in the Rochester area and for that reason is visually quite unique. Wrapping around the right front corner is a wide glassed-in veranda that feels almost greenhouse-like, but is fully heated. The house is quite tall and the main gable ridge features a belvedere, which still provides sweeping views of the surrounding area.

The Lombs lived in the house only a short time before moving to New York City for Adolph's work. In 1946, the property was sold to the newly consolidated Pittsford Central School District. Classes were held in the building for a few years until Sutherland High School was opened in 1953. The building then housed the District's primary administrative offices until about ten years ago when they were moved to a vacated wing of the Barker Road Middle School. The mansion is still used for a variety of school functions.
