Election:

Ready Set Go!

Linda Seymour Newsletter No 2.

Hello supporter

Welcome to newsletter No 2 in my campaign.

It has been a big week in politics with lots of talk about political donations, especially donations to independents. You may have read in the local paper that my campaign is not seeking big financial backers and I want to be clear, this includes funding from Climate 200, a political funding organisation that is giving money to some Independents.

We had numerous early discussions with Climate 200 as many of our stated goals are aligned. However, we eventually realised we weren't as aligned as we first thought, their interest was in money-led campaigns, our interest is in community-led campaigns. Their determinate of a good candidate was how much money had they raised, they were not interested in my character, the validity of my community connections nor did they show interest in the Hughes community in general.

Anyone who knows me knows that I would never focus my campaign efforts on fundraising and especially not in January when people everywhere were under so much stress. We were also uncomfortable that Climate 200 wanted us to share campaign information, especially as they were talking to another candidate in Hughes. We decided Climate 200 support was not a good fit for my campaign so we did not go forward with a funding application. We are very comfortable we made that decision.

I have, however, received donations from wonderful people, including my family, who all care about democracy and integrity, who are excited to be part of a campaign that is focused on our community, and who have made no demands on me. For them I maintain my integrity, I am inclusive, and I seek to be informed about the issues that are important to Hughes.

My campaign will not be flashy, but I wouldn't want it that way. It is staggering how much money can be frittered away on pointless branding and advertising. I will be quite happy if I never see another Clive Palmer billboard or text message. Money is not synonymous with ethics and integrity, we all know that.

My team and I also explored getting an office. However, when our cheap and cheerful option fell through, we realised we are happy to be where our community is. So for us, it will be tables, chairs and conversations where you are, at local places, events and halls. That will do us just fine. Please keep an eye out for upcoming events and for the purple and green team.

You can be certain that no matter what happens, over the next few months I will make a mark for Hughes. I will raise our issues including mining under the Woronora water catchment and air quality measurement around the Moorebank Intermodal, and I will put them on the National stage.

If I win and neither of the major parties have enough seats to form the government, I will negotiate with both in good faith. At the top of my list will be support for a robust Federal Integrity Commission and significant political donation reform. I will require action on climate change that respects the recommendations of the International Panel on Climate Change. I will expect a commitment of at least 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 in line with the Business Council of Australia and NSW State Commitments. I will need to hear how both parties aim to increase diversity in the parliament, and that goes beyond increasing the number of white women in their ranks (yes I see the irony in that statement). I want to see how they intend to recruit candidates that have a diversity of professions, social backgrounds and life experiences.

Anyway, back to the day-to-day stuff, if you wish to donate I am always happy for the help and if you can spare some of your time or skills we would love to have you share this journey with us.

I always want to hear from the Hughes community, so please do not hesitate to contact me.

What have I been seeing, hearing and doing this week?

This week started by helping out the team with some letterboxing which means walking the streets of our beautiful neighbourhood. We all take photos of the things that make us smile, that make us proud, and quirky unexpected findings. I have included photos of some of the great street libraries the team have come across further down this letter. This week we have had to put in a new order for fliers to keep up with demand but we are always looking for more helpers, please email.

I was invited over for a visit with our craft team and was greeted with the most beautiful sight. Look at the photos. Our crafty team is amazing! If you want to connect with some great people and you enjoy being creative, please contact us

On Thursday I attended the Sutherland Shire Reconciliation yarning circle, and as an added bonus we were given a plant discovery tour by Graham Avery. This environment, that I have always loved, is alive with a history that is 1000s of years old. The yarning circle and plant tour have given me a whole new appreciation and a deeper connection to the land of my home.

I learnt the grass trees grow one centimetre a year and the ones dotted around Burnam Burnam are likely 100 years old. I grew up in Lilli Pilli and but I just found out that the street I grew up on "Turriell" was Dharawal language for the Lilli Pilli tree. The kookaburra could have been called the "laughing jackass" thankfully we recognised the beauty of the Dharawal language. Boomerang is also a Dharawal word, however, Dharawal boomerangs weren't made to return. I also met local artist Terry Lane, we are so lucky to be able to nurture such creativity in Hughes.

There are so many stories. We all need to celebrate this beautiful land of ours, First Nations' history and their continuing connection to Country. It is a rich cultural gift on our doorstep. As always, thank you Sutherland Shire Reconciliation for all you do.

This week I also spent some quality time with Elizabeth from community organisation Orana. Orana provide vital services across a range of areas including domestic violence, support for new mothers, adult education and more. I look forward to continuing this relationship beyond the election.

EXCITING NEWS (For me anyway): a personal best time for me on Saturday at Menai Parkrun's 300th-anniversary event. It was a great morning. 147 participants today, and 5000 runners since they began. Next week I'll be volunteering and I get to cheer others on. Thanks to all the team that joined me including first-timers, it feels good doesn't it?

We followed up with breakfast at the wonderful Cafe Y and I met a gold medal winning paralympian! I urge everyone to get behind Project Youth, who run Cafe Y. If you feel like giving today, donate to Project Youth they deserve every penny you can afford.

Flyers, signs and stickers! Help us get the word around town

Our campaign is underway - and we want as much community involvement as possible. With your help, we can get our message out, we would love you to be part of the team changing Hughes.

We are currently looking for people to help our team deliver fliers. Please contact us if you can help. You can also use this contact to grab a Vote 1 Linda Seymour sign for your front yard.

For your enjoyment, here are some of the street libraries our flyer deliverers have come across in their travels around Hughes.

Thank you :)

Everyone wants to know that the person representing Hughes in Parliament works hard every day to improve our lives.

Unfortunately, the people of this beautiful place we call home have been repeatedly let down by a member who has undermined our public health response, and ignored the science on climate change.

I am doing politics differently, working constructively with all across our electorate. With your support, I will continue to speak to people living in Hughes, to businesses and community groups. If you are able, please chip in to support to my campaign so that I can be a representative that works for you. I will keep working hard for action on climate change, integrity in politics, and a better future for us all… every amount helps.
