Reasons to Love Chickens

CHICKENS ARE AMAZING!

They have a profound memory and are able to distinguish between more than 100 faces of their species. They can also recognize people.

Chickens love to play, run, skip and flap their wings. They also enjoy sunbathing.

They communicate with their baby chicks even before they break the shell.

They use more than 20 different vocalizations to communicate.

Chickens understand that when an object is taken away and hidden, it still exists.

They purr like cats.

They are affectionate, sensitive and smart.

They use their previous experience to make future decisions.

Chickens can live up to 10 years and ducks 20 years if given the chance.

We currently have 5 families of chickens and 2 families of ducks/geese at Harmony Farm Sanctuary. When rescued chickens arrive at our sanctuary, we give them the chance to bond with the family of their choice (unless they come as a family). We allow them to pick their forever family members. Then ALL spend the day basking in the sun, scratching for food, taking dust baths, roosting, exploring and forming friendships. We go to great lengths ensuring all the rescued fowl are given the chance to live a healthy and fulfilled life!

Meet Our Rescues!

This is Einstein!

Einstein arrived to HFS last summer. He came with his bestie, Zucchini Bread.

Einstein was thought to be a hen. He was very loved. But when this hen turned out to be a rooster it became an issue. You see, people who live in town are not allowed to have roosters. Einstein's human work tirelessly to find him and Zucchini Bread a good home. His human then drove for hours to bring them to our sanctuary. He can be a little sassy and bossy at times, but who isn't! We adore and love him. Our hearts are full as we watch Einstein and Zucchini Bread live their best life possible at HFS.

This is Uncle Buck and Uncle Bob!

They are beautiful male Pekin ducks.

Uncle Bob on the right was found by a nice couple. He was dumped outside their work. He was limping and had an injured leg. They were determined to find him a safe place to live. Luckily for us he came to HFS.

Uncle Buck was part of a rescue that our Founder, Robine went on last summer. 3 ducks and 2 chickens were dumped in a drainage ditch along the highway. A loving home was found for all them. Unfortunately, that's not where the story ends. A predator (most likely an owl) started taking them one by one. Uncle Buck was taken by a large hawk but thankfully his human witnessed this and saved him. Buck had extensive injuries and his human was afraid the hawk would return so she reached out to us.

Both ducks have healed and are doing well. They have even formed a lovely bond.

We will continue to care for and provide a forever safe and loving home for these precious souls.

We love you Uncle Buck and Uncle Bob!
