Joyful Peace Yoga

March Newsletter

Good grief! March is windy! And it's fickle!

It can be warm one day and cold the next. The delta between days might be 50 degrees! It's crazy. March certainly has its mood swings! That's because it's a transition month; moving us from the cold short days of winter into the longer, warmer days of summer. Talk about the winds of change!

When I think of winds of change and yoga, spinal twists are the first to come to mind. Winds are symbolic. They represent change; shifts from one course to another. Much like life. We are headed down one route only to encounter a swift change and need to pivot towards another way.

Yoga helps to keep our minds flexible from one moment to the next. Spinal twists help to keep our bodies flexible as we pivot from one experience into the next.

March, being a changeable month, is the appropriate month to explore "TWISTS". Twists help in the anti-aging process of the spine. Spinal rotations aid in decompressing the spine. Turning the torso is like wringing out resistance to change while allowing for more space to welcome growth that will surely follow.

As the weather changes and spring approaches, practicing with JPY will keep you stable as the winds of change roll through.....

Shanti~

Philosophy Corner~ The "DOSHAS"

"Dosha" refers to a bio-energy center in Ayurvedic teaching. There are three (3) doshas: 'vata', 'pitta' & 'kapha'. Dosha energies are said to circulate in the body and govern emotions, thought tendencies and physicalities. We each fit into one dominate dosha with a possible second, smaller trait showing. Our yoga practice is intended to balance our dosha. For example, if you suspect that you are a 'kapha' and are always drawn to more grounded and slow practices, you may want to up your ante and begin a more strenuous, vinyasa flow. Conversely, if you are a 'vata' and always "on the go", a more slow and grounded practice would offer your whole being a sense of 'balance'.
