The Torah portion this week relates the famous story known as The Akedah- the one about Abraham ascending a mountain and nearly sacrificing his son Isaac at God's command. Anyone who has ever been vulnerable and abandoned is traumatized to read this account. A parent is supposed to protect a child; how could Abraham have failed so miserably that the harm to be perpetrated against his own flesh and blood would even come by his own hand?

And earlier, we see that he had abandoned his firstborn son, Ishmael, by sending him and Hagar away to wander and nearly die in the desert. Again, the near infanticide at his own hand, even if God had encouraged it.

It’s not that Abraham was a maniacal or even cold hearted shell of a human. At the beginning of the Torah portion, he warmly welcomes in three strangers into his tent, providing an archetype for synagogue inclusion. He also stood up to God when God expressed desire to destroy Sodom and Gomorra. So, how come he couldn’t stand up to Sarah who wanted to expel his son Ishmael from her midst? And how come he couldn’t stand up to God who commanded he sacrifice his son Isaac?

Abraham is a complex human being and the distance of context of the world over 4,000 years ago leaves us with more questions than answers. But the story leaves us to reflect on our own lives- for whom are we responsible for protecting? Are we doing right by them? Have we missed the mark and allowed them to be sacrificed at the altar of expediency? Have we been reluctant to take a stand that is critical to another's well-being? Have we succumbed to callousness or unconcern?

More importantly, how can we instead exhibit compassion and protective care for those around us? Our Mussar class discussed this topic yesterday and concluded that compassion is one of the most vital and important character traits to have. That compassion connects us with others, and ultimately with the Oneness of the Creator.

Join us as next Sunday, we discuss the character traits of Honor, Simplicity, and Enthusiasm. Register HERE to explore together!

Together, we are #keepingitsacred...

She was very involved in our programs and in the midst of immersing herself in the study of Judaism and practices. We uplift her loving memory by naming this program in honor of her love of exploring Jewish life through the KITS community programming.

Weiss, Provost of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion to discuss Reclaiming Women's Voices through The Torah: A Women's Commentary which she edited.  Rabbi Miller writes, "I enjoyed having Dr. Weiss teach me in rabbinical school nearly 20 years ago. She brings a literary lens to the text that illuminates understandings otherwise missed. Her work, The Torah: A Women's Commentary is a wonderful compendium of sacred text, both that of the Torah itself, and women's exegesis in the form of outlines, poetry and entries. This session is sure to inform and inspire!" Please register HERE.

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.
