שלום רב לבעלי העניין ולכל מי שעוקבים אחרינו, בתקופה הקריטית הזו, כאשר ישראל עושה מאמץ לצאת מסגר שני, קרן ירושלים ירוקה פועלת יחד עם השותפים הרבים בשדולת ירושלים בת-קיימא, בשיתוף עם עיריית ירושלים, לבנות אסטרטגיה ארוכת טווח להתמודדות של העיר ירושלים במשבר האקלים. חוץ מישיבות סדירות של השדולה עם ראש העיר ועם מהנדס העיר, העירייה מינתה צוות מקצועי לעבוד לא רק עם אגפי העירייה, אלא גם עם ארגוני חברה אזרחית ברחבי ירושלים. אין ספק שפיתוח אסטרטגיה להתמודדות בתנאי מזג אוויר קיצון בחורף ובקיץ, כמו גם בעלייה הדרגתית בטמפרטורות, לצד חשיבות שימור מערכות אקולוגיות בתוך העיר וסביבה, מציב מצד אחד אתגר ענק, ומצד שני הזדמנות אדירה לעיר הבירה. נעמי צור, מייסדת ויו"ר קרן ירושלים ירוקה Dear Jerusalem Stakeholders and Followers, At this critical time, when Israel is attempting to exit a second Covid-19 lockdown, the Jerusalem Green Fund and its many partners in the Sustainable Jerusalem Lobby are working hard together with the Municipality to develop a long-term strategy for Jerusalem to combat Climate Change. Apart from regular meetings of the lobby with both the Mayor and the City Engineer, the Mayor has appointed a professional team that will work not only in-house with municipal departments, but also in collaboration with the lobby member organizations. Yoel Siegel (see below), who is himself a JGF Stakeholder, heads the professional team, facilitating the collaboration between City Hall and civil society. Developing strategy to combat the stress of erratic weather in both winter and summer, as well as the gradual rise in temperatures and the need to preserve natural ecosystems in and around the city, is an enormous challenge for Jerusalem, but at the same time a tremendous opportunity. New English-Speakers' Focus Group In a new initiative to cater to the English-speaking community in Jerusalem, we would like to announce the establishment of a Focus Group where current affairs regarding sustainability and environment are presented and discussed in English (The group will initially be open only to JGF Stakeholders). The Focus Group will have both a learning aspect as well as an action-oriented component, similar to our very popular Hebrew initiative, the Sustainable Jerusalem Lobby, but on a smaller scale.
The first meeting will be a brainstorming session within a given framework so we may assess how to proceed in the future. RSVP for the opening meeting via Zoom on Monday, November 9th / 22 Heshvan at 20:00. Sustainable Jerusalem Lobby The Lobby met with the Mayor for its quarterly meeting on October 19th on the topics of: utilization of rooftops, solar power & energy efficiency. Moshe Leon declared his interest in promoting solar energy in Jerusalem and to have Jerusalem become a leader in energy efficiency. We will follow up, push and pressure whomever is responsible in order to make this happen! In addition we have begun bi-monthly meetings with the City Engineer, Yoel Even. Lobby representatives are also invited to meetings as part of a new Environmental Forum that Even has initiated. Our most recent meeting focused on urban trees. In response to issues which arose in the meeting of both professional city employees & activists, a working subcommittee is to be established to address the topic practically. שדולת ירושלים בת-קיימא השדולה נפגשה עם ראש העיר ב19.10 בנושא שימוש בגגות, אנרגיה סולארית והתייעלות אנרגטית. משה ליאון הצהיר כי מעוניין לקדם את תחום האנרגיה הסולארית בירושלים, וכן להוביל בתחום של התייעלות אנרגטית. אנחנו נמשיך לעקוב, ללחוץ ולהיפגש עם מי שצריך כדי שזה יקרה! בנוסף אנחנו מתחילים להיפגש עם מהנדס העיר באופן קבוע אחת לחודשיים, ונציגים מהשדולה הוזמנו להצטרף לפורום סביבה של העירייה. הפגישה האחרונה של פורום סביבה עסקה בעצים, ובעקבותיה יוקם צוות עבודה שימשיך להיפגש על מנת לדאוג לשמירה על העצים בעיר. תודה לישראל גלון, אחד מבעלי העניין שלנו, שהציג ולא מוותר! |

Givat Massua Several months ago the Sustainable Jerusalem Lobby was asked to support residents of the Givat Massua neighborhood, located in the South-Western edge of the city in their campaign against a proposed mass building project on 75 dunam of undeveloped land. The project would include 710 housing units, public & commercial buildings and open public spaces. The Lobby, as represented by Naomi Tsur, participated & presented the case against the plan last week in a hearing first of the Local Building & Planning Council, and later at a meeting of the Regional Planning Committee. The NeighborFood Program During the past few months, we have been working with the Jerusalem Food Rescuers to develop an integrated model for local food resilience. Our team players thus far also include the Kiryat Yovel Community Center and two Pre-Army programs (HaYerushalmi and Ruach Nachon), as well as two local high schools and residents of all ages. The NeighborFood Program’s vision is to create a thriving hub around a weekly rescued produce stand. The rescued fruits and vegetables come from the Jerusalem Food Rescuers’ operation at the wholesale market in Givat Shaul, as well as from local businesses, which give away food that would otherwise be discarded. People who don’t have regular access to fresh nutritious food are instrumental partners in developing and coordinating the infrastructure and system of this kind of foodway. In addition to food rescuing, the project includes several other aspects of the food cycle, such as food preservation, composting, community gardening, educational programming and monthly communal meals. Meanwhile, we have successfully worked with many residents to redistribute the produce to 50 families in need on a weekly basis, and started to provide the Kiryat Menachem soup kitchen with fresh produce as well! |

מעגל המזון השכונתי בחודשים האחרונים, כפי שדיווחנו בניוזלטר הקודם, יצאנו לדרך בפיתוח מודל מקומי משולב לביטחון תזונתי. אנחנו פועלים בשיתוף פעולה עם מצילי המזון ירושלים, מתנ"ס בית טיילור בקרית היובל, המכינות הירושלמי ורוח נכון, שני תיכונים ותושבים מכל הגילאים. חזון מעגל המזון השכונתי הוא להקים מוקד תוסס, מבוסס על מזון מוצל מהשוק הסיטונאי בגבעת שאול, ועל עסקים מקומיים, כאשר הלקוחות הם תושבים הזקוקים לפירות וירקות טריים ומזינים. מקבלי המזון מוזמנים להיות חלק פעיל מהמערך על פי יכולתם, ובכך לחזק את התשתית הקהילתית ומערכת המזון שמאפשר להם לדאוג לביטחון התזונתי שלהם. המודל שם דגש על מעורבות חברתית וערבות הדדית, אשר מעצימה בניית רשת מזון של הצלה וחלוקה מחדש בצורה מקיימת. בנוסף להצלת מזון, הפרויקט כולל עוד היבטים הקשורים למעגל המזון כגון: שימורים, קומפוסט, גינון קהילתי, תכניות חינוכיות וארוחות קהילתיות חודשיות.עד כה אנו מצליחים לחלק בממוצע כ-50 סלי מזון לנזקקים בכל שבוע! הרחבנו את הפעילות בהעברת ירקות ופירות מהשוק הסיטונאי גם לבית התמחוי בקרית מנחם! |

Kiryat Menachem The second lockdown has again highlighted the need for green and inviting open spaces near home. Following several requests from residents, we decided to launch a program to support five edible gardens in apartment buildings, located in the Ganim neighborhood, in collaboration with our partners in the Round-Table for Sustainability. More than 20 apartment buildings have applied for the program! We are looking forward to supporting residents in their efforts to green their environment, grow some food and meet their neighbors. |

קרית מנחם הסגר השני הדגיש בפנינו שוב כמה אנחנו זקוקים למרחבים ירוקים פתוחים ומזמינים ליד הבית. בעקבות כמה פניות מתושבים, החלטנו להוציא לפועל קול קורא לתוכנית תמיכה בחמש גינות מאכל בבניינים משותפים בשכונת גנים, בשיתוף פעולה עם גופים מהשולחן העגול לקיימות. יותר מ-20 בתים משותפים נרשמו לתוכנית! אנחנו מצפים לצאת לדרך ולתמוך במאמץ של תושבים להשקיע ביירוק סביבת הבית, בגידול מזון ובמפגש עם השכנים. |

כל שנה הקרן מתברכת בקבלת מתמחים חדשים מארגונים שונים וגם מפניות פרטיות אלינו. בעקבות האסיפה הכללית של הקרן, ובהסכמת גב. איה גסנר, הוחלט שההתמחות אצלנו תיקרא על שם צבי גסנר ז"ל, חבר מייסד, כדי להנציח את זכרו. הוא היה מסור לקרן, לסביבה, לעיר ולמשפחתו. כל מתמחה נכנס ילמד על אופיו ועל פועלו של צבי בקרן ירושלים ירוקה! לאחרונה אביבה הצטרפה לצוות קרן ירושלים ירוקה. היא עלתה לארץ השנה והיא להוטה לתרום למאמצים שמביאים יתרונות סביבתיים וכלכליים לישראל. התואר הראשון שלה בכימיה מאוניברסיטת בראון, והדוקטורט שלה בהנדסה ומדיניות ציבורית מאוניברסיטת קרנגי מלון. לפני לימודי התואר השלישי היא עבדה בבריאות הציבור, ובראיית מטופלים עם מחלות שלא ניתנות לטיפול. זה הוביל אותה להתעניינות בסוגיות סביבתיות: כיצד נוכל להשתמש במדע כדי ליצור סביבה בטוחה ובריאה יותר? אחרי זה היא עבדה בייעוץ סביבתי במשך מספר שנים בפרויקטים של כימיה ירוקה. נושאי המחקר שלה לדוקטורט כללו שימוש במים לייצור חשמל, סיכונים בענף האנרגיה ומשאבי מים אלטרנטיביים. לאחר שהתמקדה בחקר האנרגיה והמים בדוקטורט, היא חשבה שישראל תהיה מקום משמעותי ומרתק במיוחד להשתמש בידע שלה. עד כה היא נהנית ללמוד עברית ולחקור את העיר בין סגרים. היא מתרגשת מהפרויקטים המקומיים והמעשיים הרבים של הקרן ולומדת יותר על מדיניות הסביבה בישראל. היא מצפה לפגוש את הצוות ולשתף פעולה יחד! Every year the JGF welcomes new interns from various existing programs as well as those who reach out to us individually. After our last AGM the Board proposed that we dedicate our internship program to the memory of our founding member, Tsvi Gassner z”l. He was dedicated to the JGF, the environment, to Jerusalem & to his family. We hope that we will have many interns in the coming years, who will learn of Tsvi’s character and share his dedication! Aviva recently joined the JGF team! She made Aliyah this year and is eager to contribute to efforts that bring both environmental and economic benefits to Israel. Her first degree is in chemistry from Brown University, and her PhD is in engineering and public policy, from Carnegie Mellon University. Before graduate school, she worked in public health, and seeing patients with incurable illnesses led to her interest in environmental issues, as to how we can use science to create safer and healthier environments. After that she worked in environmental consulting for several years on green chemistry projects. Her doctoral thesis addressed the use of water for electricity generation, risk within the power sector, and alternative water resources. After focusing on energy and water research in her doctorate, she thought Israel would be an especially meaningful and fascinating place to use that skill set. So far she has enjoyed studying Hebrew and exploring the city between lockdowns. She is excited about the numerous local, practical projects of the JGF and learning more about the environmental policy field in Israel. She looks forward to meeting more of the team and working together. |

Dr. Yoel Siegel is one of the JGF’s founding members. He had collaborated with Naomi on various projects whilst she was Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem and as head of the SPNI before that. The most significant of these was creating an urban model for a biosphere (regional partnership) after setting up the team of the successful Biosphere Reserve in Megiddo, a UNESCO project. They presented the new model as a part of the Israeli delegation to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. As a result, they put Sustainable Development on the municipal agenda in a more practical light than previously presented. Jerusalem entered into international coalitions such as LAB, the Healthy Cities network and Horizon 2020, which are significant until today. It was important to Yoel to help initiate the JGF once Naomi had left the municipality, in order to have a legal platform in which to continue their work. Several of those projects laid the groundwork for the new Jerusalem Climate Change working group that Yoel has been selected to co-run ( mentioned above). Yoel holds a PhD in Community Development from the Univ. of Sussex, is a social worker and teaches at both the Hebrew University and Bezalel Academy of Art & Design in the areas of urban design, community development, and more. He was one of our founding members, as well as serving on the board of the Vertigo Dance Troupe and Eco-Art Village and the Israel Urban Forum. Yoel lives in Mevaseret Zion, is an avid weekly mountain biker and windsurfs from time to time on the Kinneret. For Yoel, “Working internationally for the last decade, and in the area of community and development for a half century confirms my conviction and belief, and further reinforces my commitment to people and to human social values.” |

ד"ר יואל סיגל אחד ממייסדי קרן ירושלים ירוקה. הוא שיתף פעולה עם נעמי בכמה פרויקטים כשהיא הייתה סגנית רה"ע, ומנהלת החברה להגנת הטבע לפני זה. המיזם הכי משמעותי היה פיתוח המודל של ביוספרה עירונית, אחרי שהקים צוות מוצלח למרחב הביוספרי במגידו, פרויקט של UNESCO. הציגו יחד את המודל החדש כחלק מהמשלחת הישראלית לוועידת הUNCED בריו דה ז'נרו ב-2012. כתוצאה מכך, הם שמו את נושא פיתוח בר-קיימא על האג'נדה המוניציפאלית בצורה יותר פרגמטית מקודם. ירושלים נכנסה לקואליציות בינלאומיות כמו LAB והוריזון 2020 , שעד היום רלוונטיים. היה חשוב ליואל לעזור בהקמה של הקרן אחרי שנעמי עזבה את החיים הפוליטיים, כדי שיהיה גוף סטטוטורי להמשיך את עבודה בפיתוח קיימות בירושלים. כמה מהפרויקטים הנ"ל הכינו את הקרקע לצוות העבודה שיואל עומד בראשו, לפיתוח מדיניות עירונית בנושא האקלים בירושלים. ליואל יש דוקטורט מאוניברסיטת סאסקס בפיתוח קהילות, הוא עובד סוציאלי ומלמד גם באוניברסיטת העברית ובבצלאל בתחום עיצוב עירוני, פיתוח קהילות ועוד. הוא היה אחד המייסדים של הקרן, והיום יושב בוועד המנהל של ורטיגו וכפר האומנות האקולוגי והפורום הישראלי לעירוניות. יואל גר במבשרת ציון, רוכב אופני הרים נלהב, וכתחביב גולש רוח בכנרת. ליואל, "עבודה בינלאומית בעשור האחרון, ובתחומי קהילה ופיתוח בחצי המאה האחרונה, מחזקת את האמונה שלי ומגבירה עוד יותר את המחויבות שלי לבני אדם ולערכים חברתיים אנושיים." |
