CHBB APRIL NEWSLETTER

What makes the bikes built by Combat Hero Bike Build different from most custom bikes?

The shifting system is one borrowed from race car systems. It operates best with the throttle on high. It is an electric activated system operated by a thumb lever which kills the engine for a nanosecond. We don’t use the automatic system as it’s too easy for a rider to forget to place the transmission in park and do what all bikers do and rev the engine and find themselves flying into an intersection. (see photo above)

We use a double lever braking system for double or right leg amputees. The system is mounted on the right side handle bars, where the normal front brake would be. It operates when the vet pulls back on the front brake, as the rider brings the lever back they then come in contact with the rear brake lever bringing the bike to a smooth stop. (see photo below)

We have used other trike kits but have pretty much switched solely to Frankenstein trike kits. They give us more flexibility with their new design.

Amputees cannot feel pressure with their “feet “ so trikes must be equipped with a reverse. Also it has happened where an amputee riding a trike can have the leg vibrate off the foot pad and fall into the road so we have added small vertical pegs on the footrests to keep their prosthetic leg from vibrating off.

These are just a few things that we have to keep in mind when modifying these bikes .

Volunteer spotlight. Jody "Flygirl" Peterson has been a volunteer with Combat Hero Bike Build since 2017 and has served both as an Area Coordinator and on the Board as Director of Operations. Jody's full time job is as an airline hostess but not sure how she finds the time with all of her volunteer activities. A motorcycle rider for 20 years, she is involved with many other organizations including Women in the Wind where she has been nominated twice for Sister of the Year in the 1,600 member international organization. Among the other organizations she is a member of Christian Motorcycle Association, Harley Owners Group, Run for the Wall and Iron Butt Association.

Jody and her husband live in Colorado so you can find her setting up events and volunteering at other Area Coordinators' events as well as at our motorcycle unveiling in Ontario, CA But she doesn't limit her fundraising to scheduled events. If you run into at one of her other organizations meetings or anywhere her job takes her you are likely to be greeted with a smile and a hug AND asked if you would like to support CHBB by purchasing some of our merchandise or donating.
