Virtual Reality for Mental Health (VR-MH) With the increasing prevalence of mental health disorders worldwide, especially among marginalized populations such as immigrants, refugees, and migrants, there is a critical need for innovative interventions. This project will develop and implement VR-based therapy programs to improve mental health outcomes among diverse populations. By providing accessible and culturally responsive interventions, the project seeks to reduce stigma, increase access to care, and promote well-being in underserved communities. Interested in joining? Cultural sensitive assessment: CultScript Cultural factors are particularly relevant to the development and expression of posttraumatic stress. Recently, the concept of cultural scripts of trauma sequelae has been introduced, proposing an emic approach, the perspective that comes from within the culture. The purpose of CultSript is to investigate cultural psychological factors that contribute to the expression of posttraumatic stress through a mixed methods approach at different study sites, including Switzerland, Israel, Georgia, China, and East Africa. More information here or contact Andreas Maercker at maercker@psychologie.uzh.ch. |

Paper in a Day engages early career researchers in using FAIR Data Paper in a Day (PIAD) will be held at the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies’ (ISTSS) 40th Annual Meeting in Boston on 25 September 2024. This year’s PIAD will feature two projects using FAIR datasets, considering (1) sleep and trauma symptoms among emergency medical service workers and (2) prolonged grief disorder symptoms among people experiencing non-traumatic and traumatic loss. Check the ISTSS Annual Meeting site to learn how to apply to ISTSS PIAD 2024 or at GCTS' student section. See the Products & Resources section of this newsletter for several recent papers that grew from past FAIR Data PIAD events at ISTSS and beyond. |

Paper in a Day (PIAD) Two successful PIADS representing GCTS and FAIR data in action carried out at the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) in Atlanta in 2022 were recently published. The first project, completed under the leadership of Hope Christie and Anke de Haan, explored trauma-related symptoms and symptom patterns across the world: Haering, S., Kooistra, M. J., Bourey, C., Chimed-Ochir, U., Doubková, N., Hoeboer, C. M., Lathan, E. C., Christie, H., de Haan, A.(2024). Exploring transdiagnostic stress and trauma-related symptoms across the world: a latent class analysis.
The second successful PIAD project - led by Anna Denejkina and Yaara Sadeh - resulted in the following paper: Sadeh, Y., Graham, L., Curtis, M., Janson, M., Kim, J., Schwartz, A., Undset, A., Denejkina, A. (2024). Posttraumatic stress and depression symptom classes in parents of trauma-exposed children: a transdiagnostic perspective using pooled individual participant data.

| | Acceptability of a two-week intensive treatment program of EMDR with therapist rotation for treating complex PTSD in a Latin American country Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) leads to functional impairment and a decrease in the quality of life for those affected. Intensive treatment with therapist rotation is a novel and effective approach for treating CPTSD, which has been tested in European countries, but not in Chile. This pilot clinical trial led by Rodrigo A. Figueroa at the Pontificia Universidad de Chile School of Medicine, will assess the local acceptability of a two-week intensive treatment program for adult inpatients diagnosed with CPTSD in a Chilean acute psychiatry unit and the need for a cross-cultural adaptation. | | |

| | Trauma in Latin America Little is known about traumatic events and their associated disorders in Latin America, which mainly consider the new diagnosis criteria based on DSM-5 or ICD-11. The LATrauma project will identify the bibliometric characteristics of studies carried out on disorders associated with trauma in Latin America. A team of collaborators has now been established, including trauma clinicians and researchers from Brazil, Chile, and Peru. | | |
