Contra Costa School of Performing Arts

Department of Dance

January 8, 2020

Happy New Year!  We hope you had a restful winter break.  The faculty has been enjoying time with family and friends, but is excited to get back into the the studio next week.  Thank you for a wonderful first semester and a successful Fall Works Program.  We appreciate all our students' hard work and the families that came out to support.  Second semester revolves heavily around our Spring Showcase in May, but we are also looking forward to our High School Winter Intensive in January and our Open Studio performances in April.  Please always reference our website for any updates to the performance season.  Thank you!

High School Winter Intensive

This year's Winter Intensive will take place January 17-19th at Hidden Valley Music Seminars in Carmel Valley, and we are are excited to welcome guest artist Amanda Wells.  Ms. Wells trained at the San Francisco Ballet School, is a graduate of Tisch School for the Arts, and danced professionally with Stephen Petronio Company and LA Dance Project.  She'll be working with our students on contemporary technique, choreography, and yoga practices.  More info on Amanda Wells here.

Spring Showcase

Thank you to those students and families who have confirmed availability for our Spring Showcase in May.  Casting is being finalized and rehearsals will begin the week of January 24th.  A rehearsal schedule will always be posted in the studio and on our department website here.

This year's showcase is May 14-17 and will be held in our black box theater.  Tickets will go on sale later this semester and we hope to see many of you there!

Conferences

All dance majors will have a student/teacher conference this semester to discuss progress and goals.  Parents are invited to attend and all available faculty are present as well.  Stay tuned for more info on scheduling.

"Into the Woods" Auditions

Students interested in a speaking/singing role for this year's musical should sign up here.  Those interested in one of the four dance ensemble roles should contact Director Mitchell (aejay.mitchell@cocospa.org) and be ready for a movement call on Thursday, January 16th.

Open Enrollment

SPA is now accepting applications for the 2020/21 academic year.  If you know anyone interested in our school, please have them fill out an application online and encourage them to attend our Arts Open House on January 31st from 5-7pm.

At this particular Open House, families will have a chance to speak with Ms. Orloff, current dance majors, and witness some of our high school students in rehearsal with Ali McKeon.

Summer Study

It may seem early, but now is the time to begin thinking about plans for summer study.  Many auditions for summer programs begin in January and there are several local schools that offer great training with a range of programs and curriculum.  We also have a relationship with California State Summer School for the Arts, which offers a competitive, four-week intensive in Southern California for high school students.  The application deadline for CSSSA is February 12th at 6pm.

We've provided some local summer programming below.  Dancer's Group also offers a comprehensive list of local summer intensives here.

(list updated in May).  I'm also happy to advise students on out-of-state summer programs.
