Known also as the Lunar New Year, our Chinese New Year is exactly as it states: the beginning of a new year in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. Annually, across the globe, more than two billion people celebrate this festival. This year, we say goodbye to the Year of the Ox, and welcome the Year of the Tiger.

"The tiger springs in the new year. Us he devours."

- T.S. Eliot, Poet, Playwright, Editor

The recognition of this celebration dates as far back as the Qin Dynasty approximately 200 years BC. The Tiger is the third of the twelve animals personifying the Chinese zodiac. One myth states that the Jade Emperor declared a race to determine where each of the creatures would land within the twelve-year zodiac cycle. The order would be decided according to when each of the animals arrived at the finish line.

Tiger, a most competitive fellow was confident he would place first. He crossed the finish line certain he’d won the raise, only to be told the cunning Rat came first, followed by the assiduous Ox. So, Tiger had to settle for third place.

A Pinch of Sage

Mouse has a tendency to fret over details. She is always on the go, scrounging for food or trinkets to take back to her nest. She is fastidious about keeping herself clean and groomed. However, she tends to keep a messy household. She is so busy attending to the details in one area, that she allows other areas in her life to fall completely between the cracks. By the time Mouse realizes what's amiss, it is too late. This can be frustrating to both Mouse, and to those who live and work with her.

Mouse medicine can bring to light that which requires your attention. It's ether an area in your life you've been neglecting, or it's that you can't see the forest for the trees. Whichever one it may be, the answer is the same.

Temperance is about balance and moderation. About avoiding the extremes and taking the middle road. Creating a balanced lifestyle requires attention on all areas - body, mind, heart and spirit. To begin, slow down and align your energy with the flow of nature. Not the hustle and bustle that surrounds you, but that of the Moon, and Sun, and Mother Earth. Meditate. Listen to your inner voice for guidance. When life gets hectic, go to a quiet place that fills you with a sense of calm. It is here, in solitude, things fall into perspective.

Remember, you are in a state of transition. Be gentle and patient with yourself.
