a guide to designing goals that you'll actually achieve |
Is it cliche to talk about goals at the start of January? Yes. It it relevant?Absolutely. While you can set goals at anytime, it always feels appropriate to set goals at the start of a new season, chapter, week, move, or year! We love a natural reset and setting goals is a great way to take advantage of those resets. To help you set goals that you will achieve, I'm going to share a formula that works for any person in any walk of life. |

When designing a goal, I'd recommend the acronym SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. We've all heard this and frankly it sounds like a great idea, but bridging the gap from a desire to a SMART goal is hard. To meet the SMART criteria, I would suggest asking yourself the following questions: 1. What day? 2. What time? 3. How much/How long? 4. Where will you be? 5. Who does that include? 6. What will you accomplish? 7. How realistic is the goal? 8. Back-up plan, if any? 9. How will you remember? 10. Anything else? |

Once you answer those questions, change the verbiage so that your goal uses positive phrasing. Rather than saying you won't do something, say what you will do. Positive phrasing will help you feel motivated and empowered. |
Ask yourself how confident you are on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being completely confident you will achieve your goal. If your answer is less than a 7 out of 10, ask what would move you to at least a 7 and adapt accordingly. |
A goal isn't complete without some kind of check-in or follow-up. Schedule a time with yourself or have a friend ask how it's going after a week. Frequent check-ins provide you an opportunity to revise your goal based on what you've learned from the past week. |
Being a human means we can fall short. We may not always complete 100% of our goals, and that's ok. It doesn't mean we should quit or throw our goal away. In completing a goal, we're looking for a positive trend rather than perfection. There are ups and downs, but overall improvement. Be kind and patient with yourself the same way you would to someone you love. |
