Dear Neighbors, Happy Fall and Happy Halloween! The 85th District has many Halloween events this month, and I will be highlighting them later in this newsletter. I would like to address an important issue that we have been hearing about. My office has been engaging in conversations with constituents who have reached out to our office to dispel the misinformation on the Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today Act (SAFE-T Act). While there are multiple provisions included in the law, the one that is causing the most questions is bail reform. Bail reform gives judges more power to hold dangerous offenders in jail because they’ll be making decisions based on a public safety assessment – not simply the defendant’s access to cash. That’s why domestic violence groups and crime survivor advocates support this smart approach. Bail reform is about making our system smarter and making our communities safer. Under the new system, a judge will decide whether to hold defendants in jail before trial on a case-by-case basis, after conducting a public safety evaluation. In fact, this is the same system federal courts have used to make custody decisions for decades. Federal courts do not release defendants on cash bail, but make an evaluation of the effect on public safety. If you would like more information I invite you to check the following article: For factual information about the SAFE-T Act, check out the following articles from trustworthy news sources and reporters below: As always, if you have questions, concerns, or need assistance with anything, please reach out to my office. My staff is available to answer questions on legislation and assist with Illinois agencies. You can reach us by call, text, or email: 815-372-0085 - info@repdagmara.org Sincerely, |

We're wishing Dulce a wonderful semester back at Stanford! |
