September 2024

A forgotten landscape

A moment of reflection. During a recent dowsing adventure on Dartmoor, we paused for lunch at an ancient hut circle overlooking Avon Dam Reservoir. Imagine the breath-taking vista the original inhabitants would have had before the valley was submerged.

The Autumn Equinox

A Time of Balance and Renewal

The autumn equinox, a celestial event that occurs this year on Sunday September 22nd 1.43 pm and marks the official beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. It is a time when day and night are of approximately equal length, symbolising a delicate balance between light and dark, yin and yang.

The Significance of This Celestial Event

While the equinox is often seen as a mere marker of seasonal change, it holds deeper significance both astronomically and symbolically.

  • Astronomical Significance

From an astronomical perspective, the equinox occurs when the Earth's axis is tilted neither directly toward nor away from the sun. This results in the sun's path across the sky appearing to cross directly over the celestial equator.

  • Symbolic Significance

Beyond its astronomical implications, the equinox carries rich symbolic meaning across various cultures. It is often associated with themes of balance, renewal, and the cycle of life. Many ancient civilisations celebrated the equinox as a time of harvest, thanksgiving, and spiritual renewal.

The Equinox and the Natural World

The autumn equinox is a time of transition in the natural world. As the days grow shorter and the nights longer, plants and animals prepare for the colder months ahead. Trees shed their leaves, creating a vibrant tapestry of colours, while animals hibernate or migrate to warmer regions.

Celebrating the Equinox

The equinox is a time for celebration and reflection. Many cultures have developed unique traditions and rituals to mark this special occasion. Here are some ideas for celebrating the autumn equinox

  • Spend time in nature. Take a stroll in the park, go for a walk, or simply sit outside and enjoy the beauty of the changing leaves.

  • Gather with friends and family. Share a meal, light candles, and enjoy each other's company.

  • Meditate or reflect: Take some time for yourself to meditate, journal, or simply sit quietly and reflect on the changing seasons.

  • Decorate your home. Bring the beauty of autumn indoors by decorating your home with Autumn-themed décor, such as harvest fruits, leaves, and candles.

  • Create something new. Engage in a creative activity, such as painting, writing, or crafting, to celebrate the renewal of the seasons.

The autumn equinox is a powerful and transformative time of year. It is a moment of balance, renewal, and connection with the natural world. By understanding the significance of the equinox and participating in its celebrations, we can deepen our appreciation for the beauty and wonder of our planet.

Are you curious about dowsing and its applications? We're inviting expressions of interest for a half-day field dowsing workshop on the southern edge of Dartmoor visiting an ancient stone circle. This workshop will explore the use of questions in the field to gain valuable insights.

The workshop content can be tailored to the specific interests and experience levels of participants. Whether you're a complete beginner or have some prior knowledge, we'll create a supportive and informative environment where everyone feels comfortable learning and exploring.

We are planning the workshop for sometime in October or November. The exact date will be finalised based on participant availability.
