The Seasons they Roll Round and Round It's finished! Member Angela Anning has completed an embellished series of cylinders representing Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. They are designed to hang free from the wall so that they can be turned to display all of the surfaces. They will be hanging from the picture rails of York Cemetery Chapel for our Annual Exhibition for all to turn and enjoy.

Small Fragments of Nature Collection In preparation for York Textile Artists annual exhibition member Julie Atthews is continuing to develop her ‘Small Fragments of Nature’ collection. Woodland fragments inspired by close up details, textures and colours are created using machine embroidery, hand stitching and embellishment with foil and beadwork. Julie will be exhibiting this work at our exhibition and at Southlands Winter Artists Fair in November. |

Sneak Preview As we tick off the days before the Annual Exhibition, member Jo Yeates is working on her biggest piece to date - and hoping that she has not bitten off more than she can chew! Jo likes to put the ‘text’ in to textile art, and this piece is no exception. Here’s a sneak preview of her work (and words) in progress… Come along on 7 & 8 October and see if she got to the end of her sentence!

Inspired by nature and the landscape around her, Caroline’s photography provides the starting point to her artwork. Each piece usually begins as a simple sketch onto fabric, using her chosen photograph as a reference. The background colours and textures are then created using a combination of appliqué, felting and painting. The details are added by ‘drawing’ with her sewing machine and ‘thread painting’ using freehand machine embroidery. Hand embroidery is used to add the finest details.

Jilly Lovett trained many years ago in Fine Art (at Edinburgh Art College and University). Since retiring in 2020 Jilly has developed her creative work in a three dimensional format. She designs and sews one-of-a-kind soft sculpture dolls in a primitive folk art style, using recycled felt, incorporating embroidery, appliqué and other vintage finds to create original works for display. The iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo with her striking features and extensive and colourful wardrobe and imagery provides a rich source to draw from.

Maggie has a theatre background so she is naturally drawn to character, place and situation. Using textiles as a medium and stitch as a technique she aims to make work that conveys an idea or tells a story. She often makes a printed substrate with layers of fabric added to create depth, tone and suggest hidden narrative. Threads that are hand or machine stitched are the alchemy to bring it all together. |
