lET THAT FAT GO!

“You think your dog is loyal—this patch of belly fat hasn’t left me in 20 years!”  When thinking of Fat, a greasy, tissue like substance comes to mind; though there are actually 3 different types of fat cells in the body with different functions. The 3 types of fat cells, white, brown and beige are stored as essential, subcutaneous and visceral fat in the body. Though a certain level of fat is healthy, large amounts can be hazardous to one's health.  Luckily, regular use of Red Light Therapy (RLT) is proven to decrease the amount of fat stored in the body!

White Fat Cells, most commonly thought of, is that which is stored directly under the skin around the belly, thighs, arms and buttocks.  This type of fat plays a large role in several hormonal functions like creating estrogen and controlling hunger, insulin, cortisol, and growth hormone levels.  A small level of white fat is beneficial, but large amounts can lead to many health issues.

Brown Fat Cells are primarily found in babies, though there is a small amount in the neck and shoulders of adults.  This type of fat burns fatty acids to keep the body warm.  While, Beige Fat Cells function somewhere between white and brown cells, helping to burn fat rather than store it.

Essential Fat is that which is essential for life, found in the brain, bone marrow, nerves and membranes that protect organs.  Essential fat plays a major role in regulating hormones that control fertility, vitamin absorption, and temperature regulation.  Aside from insulating the body and protecting vital organs, fat is the body’s way of storing energy.  Upon waking up, the body instantly releases contents of fat cells into the body, to fuel the respiratory process in the cells, which enable the cells to produce Adenosine Tri Phosphate (ATP), in turn powering the muscles and other body parts.

Though the majority of our body is considered Subcutaneous Fat; the mixture of white, brown and beige fat cells found directly under the skin.  Like an oily sponge, this tissue will soak up random pollutants and toxins, plus excess hormones and vitamins, to store forever. Though a certain amount is normal and healthy, too much will lead to an imbalance of hormones, especially those pertaining to hunger levels and metabolism.

Visceral Fat is the white fat stored around all major organs such as the liver, kidneys, pancreas, intestines, and heart.  High visceral fat levels increase the risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, artery disease, cancer, and depression.

Luckily, RLT will help you trim that fat!  In addition to boosting the cells with an increase in ATP production, RLT directly affects the Adipocytes, or cells that store fat.  RLT causes the adipocytes to release triglycerides, resulting in a notable decrease in volume.   Specifically, RLT targets the layer of fat that sits just below the skin, temporarily breaking down part of the cell membrane.  This allows the fat in the cell to leech out, shrink, and be removed by the heightened lymphatic system.  Plus, in a way similar to exercise, RLT stimulates certain hormones and enzymes that help convert white fat into beige fat, which is easier for the body to burn up as fuel.

RLT directly affects appetite in the regulation of stomach hormones, Leptin and Ghrelin.  Leptin is a hormone responsible for controlling appetite, maintaining body weight, and regulating how much energy the body burns.  In contrast, Ghrelin increases appetite and stimulates the release of growth hormone.  RLT significantly increases leptin levels while decreasing ghrelin.  This reduction in hunger levels drastically supports weight control efforts, helping to reduce the cause for snacking and overeating.

On the cosmetic level, RLT wards off cellulite and dimpling of the skin, as it stimulates collagen and elastin.  This noticeably improves the underlying structures and overall appearance of the skin.

Aside from RLT and regular exercise, it is important to eat a wide range of colorful vegetables and healthy fats.   Remember healthy fat is an essential part of the diet.  Health unsaturated fats would be those found in vegetables like avocado, artichoke, zucchini, olives, fish, eggs, nuts, and seeds.  Stay away from bad saturated fats, fried foods, processed foods, and ‘convenience foods’ that are loaded with harmful chemicals which bind to fat.
