Newsletter April 10, 2022 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

They say we’re the people of the book, but really we are the people of the question. The Jewish people love questions and even when we disagree with someone, we are supposed to phrase it in the form of a question, like some sort of Jeopardy-inspired challenge.

We love questions--especially during Passover. That’s why during the Seder we have four questions build right into the order of the service dictated by the Haggadah. We encourage people to ask what is on the Seder plate and what significance it has, and how each person makes personal meaning of the story that is meant to move us from feelings of oppression to the experience of freedom.

Today, we will take time to ask lots and lots of questions of the Exodus story that inspired Passover through a form of ancient Hebrew literature known as midrash. You may think of midrash as fan fiction, or a writing practice that fills in the backstory behind the most famous encounters in the Torah. It’s a kind of rabbinic creative writing and it offers some great insights about the text- and also insights about those who pen these imaginations.

For instance, did you ever think to ask the question of what Moses’ name was before he was drawn from the water and called Moses by Pharaoh”s daughter? What did Yocheved, Amram, Miriam, and Aaron call him for the first three months of his life, anyway?

Or what about the feelings that Amram and Yocheced must have had living under oppression in Egypt and also the decree to kill all firstborn males?

And how exactly did the midwives resist following Phaeaoh’s decree that they should kill all Israelite male babies? What was their plan and strategy?

Believe it or not, we actually have records of these questions being asked and answered by sages loving 2000 years ago and today we will explore these midrashim/imaginations that have human resonance and teachings of their own. Join us? Information at keepingitsacred.com/upcoming (and also below!).

And never stop asking (and answering) these beautiful questions.

This is how we keep it sacred. Together, we’re #keepingitsacred….

IN OBSERVANCE OF YOM HASHOAH: SURVIVORS' TALMUD

In observance of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) this year,  join us as we explore The Survivors’ Talmud, a work inextricably linked to Jewish hope and survival triumphing over the Nazi plan for extermination of Jewish life. Jackie Ben Efraim, the Special Collections Director at The Ostrow Library at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles will lead us through this fascinating history and leave us with insights on the determination, strength, and resilience of the Jewish people. Join us Monday April 17 at Noon PT/3pm ET.

More about the speaker and Survivor's Talmud:

Jackie  Ben-Efraim is originally from Silver Spring, MD  where she volunteered in the school library in lieu of gym class. Jackie started her college career at the University of Maryland. She moved to New York to attend the Joint Program at JTS and Columbia University. She completed her undergraduate degree as well as her MLS at Columbia. Jackie was an intern at the YIVO library as part of her masters degree program. After Jackie moved to Los Angeles in 1980, she studied at UCLA’s Rare Book School and has taken courses in book conservation under the direction of the Head of Preservation at The Huntington Library. For the last 15 years, Jackie has been the Special Collections Librarian in the Ostrow Library’s Lowy-Winkler Family Rare Book Center at American Jewish University. Twice a year she creates exhibits with materials from the Lowy-Winkler Rare Book Center.

The Survivors Talmud, sometimes called the U.S. Army Talmud, is the amazing saga of how a set of Shas came to be printed for the Jews in DP camps following the Holocaust. The fact that the printing was under the auspices of the U.S. Army is not the only fascinating fact about this edition. For the last ten years, Jackie Ben-Efraim had been searching for the heretofore unknown illustrator who created the moving title page depicting a concentration camp. With the help of her fellow members of the Association of Jewish Libraries, she was able to discover the artist’s identity, which she will share in this presentation, along with other anecdotes about the struggle to create religious materials for those who survived the horrors of WWII.

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

He called his work “Duties of the Heart,” and it is the work upon which the Mussar Movement (of Exceptional Character Qualities) is based.
