THE PEARL PSYCHEDELIC INSTITUTE Winter 2023 Newsletter |
If you've ever walked under a full moon on a snowy winter's evening, you've probably experienced the tranquility that this season can bring. However, there are many who, due to mental health challenges, find it difficult to embrace the peace that winter offers. As we move through this time of shortened days and quiet nights, we reflect on the opportunity that winter offers for rest and restoration. Read Dr. T's Corner for advice on how to seek out moments to settle the heart and feed the soul. “I pray this winter be gentle and kind—a season of rest from the wheel of the mind.” John Geddes |

Dr T's CORNER: PEARLS OF WISDOM FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR |
It's winter time again and the days are short and the nights are long and this is an excellent time for folks to slow down a bit and listen to their quiet parts. These are the parts of ourselves that want to be acknowledged and perhaps expressed but are often shunned by the frenetic agitations and distractions that often characterize functionality and productivity in "the real world." These are the parts of ourselves that long to perhaps stop and reflect on our lives and slow down enough to find the time to write our thoughts.....or re-awaken that form of creative expression we used to love (music, poetry, drawing, painting, etc) before adulting took over and convinced us we no longer had time for such things....or finding time during the day to take 10-15 minutes and just focus on our breathing and detach from the monkey chatter that is always trying to distract us from a fuller awareness of the present moment. Listen to your body and consider some consistent movement practice (walking, yoga, stretching). Take some time to read a book you have been wanting to find the time to read. Not only are these suggestions helpful for our general mental and physical health (which we know are interrelated) but they are also excellent practices to help facilitate the integration of experiences of non-ordinary states of consciousness, including psychedelic experiences. These experiences typically contain important information, often of a symbolic nature from our more quiet parts, that requires us to create the time and space in our lives to allow room for this information to crystallize, blossom and become a part of our everyday lives. I hope that all of you are able to find a little time to slow down and listen to your quiet parts this winter.... |
