Woodworking: the act, process, or occupation of working wood into a beautiful, useful, and desired form

Greeting Carving enthusiasts.

I was asked to step up as president as James has more daytime responsibilities. Hopefully his job will smooth out and we will see his energy at future carving sessions. And speaking of carving we are starting to meet again in September. Look for the whole schedule on our website. But as a reminder we meet every second and fourth Saturday from 10:00 am until about 2:00 or when your project is finished. Bring something to carve or come carve one of the new ideas that Cindy has thought of for the week. Look for an announcement for our fall carving seminar soon. If you are interested in being an instructor contact Robert Pelno.

I am always amazed at the variety of carving artists that we have. Much of my carving experience has been with power tools and sometimes very large pieces. But having participated in some of the carving seminars I have broadened my experience and education by watching and participating in other forms of carving. I have made bark houses and faces, carved a basswood seahorse and am working on a cedar piece with dolphins. Diamond willow canes and walking sticks give you something very functional. I have yet to participate wood burning or some of the other fascinating classes but will do so soon. Watch for upcoming announcements of our carving seminars.

I was contacted by the wife of a carver who recently passed away. This carver was not a member that I can tell but his form of carving would have made for some fantastic demonstrations. Paul was more of a sculptor and loved free form carving with hardwood. No power tools at all. His wife agreed to loan a couple of his pieces and I will bring them later this fall to one of our weekend carving sessions. Maybe someone will be inspired with another style of carving. His “estate” of carving supplies will available also at some point for sale. We are doing inventory now and will likely have them at our Saturday carving sessions. More on that later.

Finally we need more help at the Alaska State fair. Volunteers should contact Cindy for time and day slots. With your commitment to volunteer you get free admission and free parking. August 5 and 6 are the days to enter any projects. I believe you can enter items from 11:00 to 7:00 both days at Irwin Hall. I just finished a couple hopefuls last night and will be submitting them.

Gino DelFrate

State Fair time is coming up in August and they need our help. First.... Please enter a project. Intake is August 5 and 6th. There are no entry fees, but you could win some money. I am offering to bring your project up to the Fair if you can get it to me. This is open to carvers, scrollers, turners and woodworkers.I have talked to Ray (907-529-9732) and Chris (907-232-9962) and we would have a good showing if we can have your support.

August 19 at noon the Fair opens their door. We need demonstrators from all clubs and for each day until September 5th. Remember Tuesday and Wednesday the Fair is closed. Could you take one day or maybe two days. You will get a free parking pass and entry passes. Oh, they have the Turners and Scrollers on one side of the walkway and the carvers across from them.

Check your calendar, pick your days, and give Roy, Chris or Cindy, a call. We are waiting!! There might be a free camping passes also if you want to come for a weekend.

Remember.....

907-529-9732 for Ray (Scrollers)

907-232-9962 for Chris (Turners)

907-862-1143 for Cindy (Woodcarvers and project entry) to take action.
