As we celebrate our 25th year in business, we thought it worthwhile to share our thoughts on the past quarter century. It is hard to believe that it has been twenty-five years. Who would have predicted that little more than an idea and a one-man crew and drill would survive to celebrate its 25th year in business? We were tiny at the beginning. Some would say our survival is a tribute to our hard work. We like to think that our 25 years of success can be attributed to a meticulous commitment to our core values: our commitment to our employees and their families, and our service commitment to you, our customers.
This milestone provides us an opportunity to both reflect on our past and to look forward to our future. As we celebrate, we say “thank you” to all of our customers and co-workers, both past and present. At the heart of these accomplishments is a great deal of hard work, dedication, and a willingness to take risks to benefit our customers. However, now is not the time to rest. Although we may be tempted to indulge in a self-congratulatory moment on our 25th anniversary, we remain mindful that the world is an ever-changing place, and if anything, we must accelerate, not relax. We must think ahead to what the next 25 years will hold. What will the industry look like in 2044? One wonders what innovative designs and engineering challenges there might be. In summary, while we have come a long way, our work is not done! Building upon our industry leadership and expertise requires further dedication, commitment to customers, innovation, and execution of top priorities. Our culture of passion for delivering customer solutions is unique. Despite the many changes we will undoubtedly make, it is this passion, and our relationships with you, our customers, which will remain the foundation for our next 25 years. For this we thank you, and look forward to your continued support. |

The Mule and the Dingo, as told by the original Dingo Probe guys... |
This tale resembles the Tortoise and the Hare's moral story that "slow and steady wins the race", but in a new age twist, we've proven that "quicker and steady" really wins the race! Once upon a time there lived a Mule. The Mule was slow and steady and got into a lot of places, but it only had a three foot stroke and only tortoise like power. It went places that the big rigs couldn't go, but it couldn't get everywhere. Sometimes when it got to the right places, it wouldn't get to the right depth. The Mule was ok (aka slow and steady), but there had to be a better way. |
The Geoprobe Mule: Enter the hare (aka Toro® Dingo). The major difference in this story is that the hare never took a nap. Actually, this hare put the pedal down and never looked back. |
The Original Dingo: One day back in 1998, about four years after the birth of EPI, our Founder, Tom Widmeier was discussing the Mule's deficiencies with a mechanic at Storr Tractor in Branchburg, NJ. Storr Tractor handled EPI's maintenance and repair of the Mule back then. When Tom finished speaking, the mechanic paused and said, "you know what, we can put a probe on one of these Dingo machines." |
He went on to say how the hydraulic pump on the Dingo had more power, which would ultimately send more power to the probe hammer. He said that with some minor fabrication, that the probe stroke could be extended so that it could advance standard four foot macrocores. The Dingo was also at least 12" narrower than the Mule and could fit through most gates. It also had a track mount option as compared to the Mules tire mount. This made Tom's wheels (and tracks) spin - a better machine that improved upon all of the Mules deficiencies. Tom and EPI's lead driller started laying the groundwork. They met with a hydraulic shop and a fabricator. They all agreed that the dream could become a reality. The rest is history. Here are some photos of our Dingo's through the years. |

And today... EPI's Current stable of Dingo's |

It takes less than 2 minutes - why not? |

EPI recently attended a GSSI Academy advanced three-day workshop in Nashua, New Hampshire focusing on the use of GSSI’s Radan© 3D software. Radan© is the most advanced GPR post processing software on the market. The software was designed to process, view, and document GPR data collected with GSSI radar systems. The class taught GPR signal processing, advanced 3D imaging, and the use of interactive analysis tools. This 3D software can be used for both archaeological and utility mapping. |
In archaeological projects, the software can reveal 3D views of such features as graves, buried walkways and roads, privies, and building foundations. In utility projects, the software can produce 3D views of underground piping including water, gas, sewer, and electric lines along with underground storage tanks (USTs). |

We have had the pleasure of visiting several client sites and educating over one hundred people these past few months on the benefits and uses of line tracing, EM tracing and GPR equipment (ground penetrating radar). In these demonstrations, Paul, our geophysicist, explains how these services can SAVE MONEY, REDUCE RISK and provide QUALITY ASSURANCE. |
"During a recent presentation, EPI's Geophysics Manager, Paul did a great job explaining and demonstrating how EPI can benefit clients and property owners avoid the awful experience of striking, and likely damaging, buried utilities. Until you have lived through this situation, you couldn't imagine how dangerous, stressful and time consuming it is!" |
During our presentations, Professor McLeod teaches a few tricks and he also shows how we can locate UST's, most subsurface features and also visualize geological anomalies that will no doubt add value to your projects. We would love to show off our state of the art GPR, line tracing and EM equipment and who doesn't like a free lunch! |
