Wishing you a happy & luminous holiday season & new year!

Wreaths in December

This month we held two wreath-making workshops at county parks in Kona and Kaʻū. Co-creating in a safe space was the ultimate gift this year!

Shout out to the local social service agencies and staff that provide person-centered care and opportunity to people with all sorts of abilities and needs: Care Hawaiʻi, Arc of Kona, Steadfast Housing, and Dept. of Health - Adult Mental Health Division.

And a very merry mahalo to:

•co-visionary Mona Maynard for always holding the light

•Stefanie, Chad, and Rosemary for hands-on support

•Keauhou Transfer Station for the constant supply of repurposed material! We love you!

•Vibrant Hawaiʻi for making these workshops possible

Last call for 2022 GIVING!

Mahalo to those who recently gifted Root & Rise through donations, Seed Circle membership, supply contributions, and holiday card purchases: Liz, Jean, Gwyn, Bri, Keeks, Emily, Meg, K’s Greenhouse, Chad, Claire, Colby, and Rachel!

It’s our last push of the year. Please consider giving in the following ways:

  • The Seed Circle: The Seed Circle is our monthly giving program, an essential source of sustained funding for our programs and organizational health, capacity-building, and emergency preparedness. Choose ANY amount (even $5 makes a difference!) to contribute on a recurring, monthly basis.

  • One-time donations: A gift of any amount is always appreciated. Gifts will go directly toward program delivery.

  • Supply contributions: Right now, we need: tacky glue, fabri-tac, acrylic paint, and 8.5x11 paper (recycled please). Please let us know if we can expect a contribution! Items can be shipped to Root & Rise, PO Box 377452, Ocean View, HI 96737.

Soaring High at ‘Ehunui

A favorite project was creating these ‘io (Hawaiian hawk) wings with the students at ‘Ehunui, a K-12 Hawaiian immersion school in Kealakekua, thanks to partnership with the Society for Kona’s Art & Education.

The ‘io is the school mascot – a regal bird that hovers over the mountainside and soars above the forest. The 7th graders led the project by designing and outlining the wing and feather shapes. Grades 1, 4, and 7 painted with watercolor, cut out, and glued individual feathers to create one collective masterpiece. The colors were brilliant and the collaborative project encouraged students to work toward a common goal.

Seeds of Intention

Keiki and teens at Humanity Hale crafted seed paper (blended paper with embedded seeds and petals) and reflected on intentions for a bright future. Seed paper will sprout when directly planted in soil and tended to – a metaphor for the way in which we can commit to and nourish our dreams and goals.

Humanity Hale is a local non-profit committed to helping youth discover the tools to release trauma and transmute pain through group and individual therapy, as well as through various programs focusing on overall well-being.
