Dear Colleague, Welcome to this month's newsletter! The CCUK team is still buzzing from the success of the Innovation in Action Technology Showcase at the 32nd IFSCC Congress in London last month (see below). We were delighted with the quality of entries and congratulate the winners - PBL Ltd with their waterless sheet technology (DRIES), which turns into a skin care product with water on the skin. The showcase provided a lively backdrop to a science-filled symposium. As the judges noted, when showcasing their brands and technologies to the scientific audience, the participants showed their enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit. This is something we truly celebrate at CCUK. Thanks also to all the judges involved in the pre-selection of the finalists and on the day. Save the date! We still have some important events coming up before the end of the year: The CCUK team will be at SCS Formulate on 15/16th November - visit us at booth 919. if you are there and come to Gill and Katerina's talks in the Inform session on 16th November. We have finally re-arranged our 'Spotlight on China' webinar to take place on 24th November. Speakers will cover product and efficacy claims and compliance, export advice and regulatory landscape as well as market trends.
We have been fortunate to have some extra support over the past few weeks and we would like to thank University of Bradford Masters graduate Kristina Kacmarova for support with our industry mapping project (more news next month) and Caz Westgate for support with website, social media and newsletters.

The International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) Showcase Summary CCUK were delighted with the success of the recent Innovation in Action - Technology Showcase, held on the final day of the IFSCC congress in London. From the kernel of an idea to selection of our ten finalists, the aim throughout was to attract the latest innovations, either prelaunch or launched within the past year or so. We were delighted with the response as the entries came in from the UK, Europe and the USA. The IFSCC is the premier showcase for the latest in cosmetic science advances and the quality and variety of presentations and posters was very high. However, our Showcase opened up an opportunity for innovators in small start-ups or new businesses to win a day at the congress and an opportunity to show their technologies to an expert and interested audience. |

The entries were judged by an expert panel in pre-selection and on the day, and there was a unanimous decision to award Plant Biotechnology Ltd DRIES technology the overall winner. Their novel dry cream in a sheet technology ‘DRIES’ is at the forefront of developing waterless skin care and we wish them great success as they take the next steps with their innovations. A deserved second place went to the team at Keratify Ltd who have made a game-changer in their ex vivo skin culture system with much superior skin integrity for skin project testing. The magical ‘physics based’ hair and eye colour technology from The UNSEEN Beauty was also highly commended. Dr Katerina Steventon summed up the event by saying "Meeting all brands in-person, listening to their stories and evaluating how innovative their technology is, was very interesting after two years of the pandemic". We had such a successful event that we are now thinking of running an annual competition in future, together with the SCS. |

On October 11, during the framework of the Cosmetic 360 tradeshow in Paris organised by our fellow Global Cosmetic Cluster (GCC) board member, Cosmetic Valley, the general assembly of the GCC took place both in person and virtually. As part of the day, delegates were able to join a tour of the Givaudan facility and also the house of the artist, Monet, both of which were cultural highlights offering networking and social opportunities between the clusters present. During the General Assembly, the board reported on activities of the committees and the plans for 2023. CCUK Director, Jane Evison was present virtually and although the contribution on the day did not go to plan due to a power cut, she had worked with fellow board and committee members to create the presentation shared. For 2023, the main aim of the GCC is to facilitate and enhance the inter cluster working relationships and better knowledge of each other's members and maximise the opportunities of the network. This could be by digital means as well as an increased amount of in person networking, which has already been very successful this year. All CCUK members are automatically represented in the GCC through our active participation as founder members and we have great hopes for 2023 being a year when our international activities will start to have a real impact. |
