Update #12  2022

Welcome to another update from the Sturt's Steps Project Team.

Sturt's Steps a strategic project funded by Infrastructure NSW to deliver 12 elements to Corner Country NSW that will provide amenities for visitors to increase tourism to the area.

Kicked off in May 2020, it is aimed to be completed by the end of 2022.

Read below and visit our website with all the updates from the team.

Congratulations Ruth!

A big congratulations for the recognition received at the 2021 Tourism Awards held on the 3rd of February. Ruth was awarded the Dean Gorddard Award for Outstanding Contribution by an Individual to Tourism.

For those that knew Dean, it was always about others and not about himself and his passion for the industry shone through and impacted those around him. There is no person more deserving than Ruth Sandow, who has contributed decades of her time to growing the tourism industry in the Corner Country area. The instigator of the Sturts Steps project and one of the most successful tourism volunteer projects in the country.  Well done Ruth!

Call for interested parties from media and wholesalers for Famil #2

Due to the rain in March 2021, we were unable to run our second scheduled familiarisation for Sturt's Steps. This has now been rescheduled for 7-11 March 2022 and there are a few seats left. Expressions of Interest are now being taken for those seats. If you have the capacity to promote the destination to future travellers we want to hear from you. This is an industry-supported famil and you will be required to get yourself to Broken Hill for the start of the famil and get yourself home again.

Seats are limited so respond as soon as possible if you want to see more people take this incredible journey in Outback Australia.

New additions popping up

across the Corner

The plans that were once only on paper are starting to become reality across Sturts Steps. Covid threw challenges for some elements but not for others as we are able to now see the new museums in place and their fit-out planning underway, the new sculptures in Tibooburra (pictured above) and Milparinka that add to the ones already visible in Sturt National Park.

The Interpretation Shelters and Posts that will be placed in 32 locations across the touring route are now being manufactured and will be delivered onsite in coming weeks for installation. These interpretation signs culminated over 300 hours of research and was consolidated in just over 30,400 words.

Refreshed look for Corner Country and its Partners

Through the work of the Sturts Steps project and the opportunity of using the professional services for graphics and communications for the signs, website content and museums, we were able to help the towns in getting a refresh of their logo and adding to the connection of the region. Each with its own identity the logos reflect the place but still connect to the journey that visitors can take and feel like they visit part of the family at every stop.

We encourage all businesses and organisations located within these towns and surrounds to actively support this opportunity to connect better with potential visitors and use these logos where appropriate. Logos can be obtained from the Project Management team of Sturt's Steps Touring Route.

Sneak Peak of the Information Shelters

Each shelter will be strategically located along the touring route and depict places of historical significance. Standing 3 metres tall and 2.4 metres wide, they will be noticed as people pass and uniquely designed to gain attention from one to the next. Comprising of many hours of research, editing, designing and manufacturing, the shelters are close to moving into their final stage of installation. Shown above, the content is comprehensive yet succinct and will engage visitors with quick snapshots of information, historic photos and what they can see in surrounding area today.
