There is a misunderstanding that humectants can always help to replenish the moisture of skin. Humectants, such as hyaluronic acid, glycerine, sodium PCA and vitamin B5, etc., are well-known to attract moisture into skin from the air. However, in dry condition, humectants can draw moisture away from the younger and moist cells in the lower layers of the skin. This could eventually lead to even dryer skin. To minimise the condition, a second layer of defence is needed, such as cream or lotion, to seal the moisture.
