April Updates!

MPA Office Update:

Governor Walz has directed all individuals within the State of Minnesota to stay at home as a result of the COVID-19 peacetime emergency. The stay at home order is effective at 11:59 pm Friday, March 27, 2020 and will last until Friday, April 10, 2020 at 5:00 pm. Since the Minnesota Psychological Association and its management company (The Harrington Company) are not considered "Critical Sectors," our office will be closed during this stay at home order. MPA staff will still be working remotely and the best way to reach them is via email at info@mnpsych.org. Phone calls will not be answered by a live person during this time. Please leave a voicemail when you call our office phone and a staff member will return your call, or request a callback by emailing staff. Thank you for your patience during this time.

Self-Care for Students

Being a graduate student in this pandemic can be a stressful time; juggling school, work, and practicum (and family for some of us!) in the same space may lead to mental health changes. Here are some ways to practice mindfulness, gratitude, and patience with our bodies during the pandemic:

  • 25 Mental Health Tips from a Psychologist
  • APAGS COVID19 facebook discussion forum for students
  • Talk a walk during non-peak hours
  • Start a gratitude journal
  • Practice meditation (Headspace App is free for healthcare professionals)
  • Reach out to your peers for support
  • Take naps!
  • Look out your window for a minute between zoom/google hangout sessions
  • Emergency Mental Health Funds for providers in Minneapolis who are serving minority populations
  • Free virtual yoga and workouts offered by studios in the Twin Cities
Conversation Starters That Have Nothing to Do With the Coronavirus

It's important to stay informed on the latest pandemic news, but you may find yourself wanting to have a chat or four about non-coronavirus things. If it feels as if almost every conversation you have, whether with co-workers or loved ones, veers toward talk of the coronavirus, you're not alone with that thought.

This Togetherness Is Temporary

Just as I was getting a little wistful about my teens leaving the nest, we find ourselves confined in the nest together. Get this: A couple of months ago, I quit my job in order to be home more. Go ahead and laugh at the timing. I know.

Feel free to reach out to us (Quincy and David) for support at studentdivisionmpa@gmail.com! You are not alone!
