Join us for Facebook Live on Sat Feb 11th from 6-7 pm to watch this heartwarming and fun event for Valentines weekend! And please share it!

We will bring in dogs from Animal Charities that are waiting to be adopted and host a Confidence building class. Our goal is to get the dogs out of the shelter for a fun night and expose how wonderful they are to hopefully help find them forever homes!

So, sharing the video is critical in reaching people!

We will be doing this monthly starting in March & will open it up to the public to be a handler for one of the dogs in the class!

It's a great time to have fun with them, show them some kindness and love and just hang out with a super cool pup!

Call 330-707-4160 to register for upcoming dates at our Poland location. Must be 18 or older.

We are also asking for donations of soft Milkbones or similar treats (as some of the shelter dogs are older) as well as a few larger orthopedic dog beds for them to lay on during class.

"Dobby was adopted into our family on August 21, 2021. We saw his picture from the rescue, fell in love with his adorable ears, and knew we couldn't pass up a pup with one of our favorite character names.

"Dobby is sweet, very energetic, and loves to be with our family. We are "his people" for sure and we treasure every moment of his cuddles and kisses! Dobby loves to wear bandanas, sitting up a little straighter when we put them on, and prances around like he knows how handsome he is when wearing them.

"We do not know much about Dobby's history, but he is somewhere between 2 and 2.5 years old.  He came to us with some training, but needing a lot of help to focus his energy.  We know that Dobby is smart, sweet, and playful, but we didn't take the time to learn how best to train him.

"Enter Jenny and Dogsmartz. Our experience with our two training classes has been phenomenal. Jenny is patient with us, points out behaviors and patterns that we have never noticed before, takes the time to explain how Dobby is thinking and how we can support his needs, and it's easy to see how much she cares about our furry family member. Since starting our training, Dobby has excelled in commands like Leave It, Stay, Come, and is showing us how smart he really is!

"Walks have become more focused and he loves his attention work. The next class we will take is Walk With Me. Our whole family loves long walks with Dobby and we look forward to learning how best to let him be free to explore and sniff, but not have him chase after other people and squirrels too much!"

Thank you, Susan Shaker

Fear Free Focus

When Precious Cargo becomes Precarious Cargo: Loading the Car

By Karen Becker, Ph.D, CPDT-KA, Fear Free® Certified

This time of year, we often find ourselves and our pups stuck inside and looking for ways to do some enrichment -- winter is a great time to prepare for future unpredictable problems – such as getting King in the car. Even if your dog loves car rides and loads up easily, we need to think about:

· Emergencies and injuries

· Someone else needing to load King

· Aging pooches

FEAR FREE APPROACH

A predominant concept in Fear Free® training is to practice commands or cues and behaviors when they aren’t needed or at least before they become necessary. In this column, for instance, we’ve discussed planning ahead for Dandy to be ready to wear a hat or costume for special events. Another example is practicing calm greetings in class, with family members and frequent guests, before greeting new people or friendly strangers on the street. Similarly, with the reasons listed above and more, it’s a good to practice getting a dog – especially those too big to pick-up easily – into a car. AND, there’s that possibility that when loading your usually compliant pup something accidently goes wrong resulting in loading to be scary.

Practicing now – in colder months – as an enrichment activity – may payoff in the future! Teach a puppy while it’s young, before injuries, arthritis or other potential negative associations with entering a car occur – it can be fun, builds confidence and relieves you from troubles in the future. Stairs and ramps may be helpful later in life to get on a couch or bed for snuggles with their human, or to get on a grooming table or vet exam table. Time spent now may be well-appreciated in the future by both the 2- and 4-legged family members.

Private Training Sessions

Privates can be done for specific behavior issues such as but not limited to fear, anxiety, aggression or if basic training (obedience/manners) is desired.  The initial private session is 90 minutes long.  Based upon the information provided to us on our behavior history form, we will prepare a preliminary plan. Upon arrival, we will first observe the situation, implement management changes and teach new skills sets.  After the visit, we will provide a typed Behavior Treatment Plan for you to keep and use as a blueprint to work from.

For any behavior issues, we will also send letter to your Veterinarian (if you approve) to advise them of our observations and our plan moving forward.  We will work closely with your veterinarian in cases that require this.  The plan will be adjusted accordingly based upon our observations and may be further adjusted as we discuss progress in the weeks ahead.  You will have access to us for the lifetime of your pet after your visit via phone, text or email for any questions and/or concerns.  We request you provide us updates weekly or however often is needed via phone, email or text.

If you attend a private session at our facility, we do require your dog to be vaccinated with the following: Rabies, Bordetella, Distemper and a negative fecal.

Private Behavior Questionnaire

Fearful and Shy - $190.00

This class is designed for dogs that are fearful (shy, timid, apprehensive) with people.

We work on teaching our dogs how to become comfortable being present with a stranger, approaching and greeting them. We do this in a way that allows our dogs to move forward or retreat when THEY want to. We teach owners how to identify signals to help guide their dogs through their process. In addition, we work on small confidence building exercises to help their overall confidence throughout the class.

It is not uncommon for dogs in this class to repeat it to further their practice and work with strangers.  After a dog graduates from Fearful and Shy class, we often recommend Confidence Building class as the next step in their process.

If your dog is only fearful of dogs, we recommend first evaluating your dog at our facility to determine the best plan for helping your dog.

For dogs that are fearful of noises, objects and environments but not people, we recommend  our Confidence Building class.
