The Colors of Mexico

Oaxaca de Juarez

Dear friend,
There are only a few hours before the moon perfects its opposition to the sun in Aquarius.  That means the Leo Full Moon is upon us.

It's 2:47 AM and all of the dogs in all of Mexico are howling and barking at each other across the Moon-lit red-tile rooftops.  Every single dog, I swear to God.  Roof-dogs, street-dogs, yard-dogs...  Even when it's not a full moon, Mexican dogs are a thing.  There is a bone-afide canine cacophony blaring outside my window.  It feels like I'm in one of those cartoon dog movies.  Or, remember that old painting of the dogs playing cards and smoking cigars?  Yeah well, that's happening all over town tonight.  I'm not going to get much sleep.

So, yes, you read that right.  I'm in Mexico.

Shortly after I wrote you my postcard from the jungle I had a flash of insight - a moment of clarity:  No one was making me stay in Costa Rica!  I realized I didn't have anything to prove to anyone by staying there.  I had no obligation, no duty or necessity to continue to bear the sweaty, sticky, slimy, balmy, buggy, muggy, wormy, raw, relentless, too-g-d-vivid jungle (#thanksSwitters).

So, I scrubbed the mold off of all my clothes and my suitcase, then haphazardly stuffed the former into the latter, and proceeded to crawl out of the mud and onto higher, drier ground.

Just as the clock struck 2022 I hopped on a jet to Mexico.  Three days later a puddle-jumper tchuk-tchuk-plunk'ed me down in Oaxaca de Juarez (South Mexico), which is where I sit now, gazing out across the night scape of the vast, light-dotted vista that is this high-plains small city nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Madres.

Now, if you've been hanging out with me for a while you know that I've lived on various continents in various countries throughout the world.  You may have a vague recollection of my former life troubadour'ing all over Europe, Canada and the US.  If we go back a little farther you might remember my years living in Austin and scurrying hither and tither across every back-country backward-county back-road in Texas.  But get this, friend...

I had never ever been to Mexico!  Until now.
