The Open Gardens

On Sunday 4th July The Old Rectory in Bugthorpe is opening its garden as part of the National Open Garden Scheme. This lovely garden will be open from 10am - 4pm for visitors to enjoy its beautiful borders and raised vegetable beds set amongst mature trees with views of the Wolds.

Visitors can pre book online or pay at the gate with all proceeds given to the National Garden Scheme who support Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, Parkinson’s UK, KIDS, Mind and many other charities. Entrance to the garden is £4.50. Children are free.

On this day refreshments will be served all day at Bugthorpe War Memorial Institute. Everyone is invited to enjoy tea, coffee and home-made cakes (all the most up-to-date government guidelines will be followed concerning hygiene and social distancing).

If anyone is willing to bake a cake for this event we would love to hear from you! Any donation of cakes or scones would be very gratefully received. If you are able to help by baking a cake please email jmwardell163@gmail.com telling us which kind of cake you are willing to provide.

Cakes should be delivered to the village hall on the morning of Sunday 4th July 2021 or we can arrange to collect if that would help.

THANK YOU!

BugClub Launch!

During the past strange year there have been frequent occasions when we have looked forward to when things get ‘back to normal’. With this in mind the Village Hall Committee and the Website Team have been thinking of different village events that hopefully will be able to take place as lockdown eases. There is a range of ideas to cater for all ages and interests in the form of a club for everyone -

BUG CLUB!

BugClub is just shorthand for events organised for people and families in Bugthorpe and surrounding areas. No joining fee or membership needed, just regular events that people can dip in and out of depending on their interests.

The sort of ideas we have come up with include:

• Pop up Pub Nights, Race Night, Bingo, Quiz Nights, Beetle Drives

• Local History, Gardening, Local Wildlife

• Barn Dance, Wine Night, Village Business Fair, Village Auction

Of course the list is endless. Anyone will be able to put forward an idea and organise an evening e.g. to raise money for a favourite charity or just for fun. These would be alongside annual favourites like the 6 Nations Rugby afternoons which have proved to be very successful.

A calendar of events is currently being compiled to get Bug Club under way but in the meantime there is one date for your diary...

• Saturday 7th August 2:30pm Village Walk followed by refreshment at the Village Hall. This will also be an opportunity to welcome home those taking part in the planned 14 mile Sponsored Walk aiming to raise money to replace the round windows at the hall.

For the most up to date information visit the website, but we will be in touch shortly with more information about the launch and further dates.

Bugthorpe Walk

The Bugthorpe War Memorial Institute Committee would like to invite everyone to take part in a village walk on the afternoon of Saturday 7th August 2021.

We will start from the village hall at 2:30 pm, on return refreshments will be available. The route is approximately 2 miles and there will be some road walking as well as along public footpaths.

If you don’t fancy a walk just come along to the village hall for refreshments from 4pm. This will coincide with the return of people taking part in the sponsored walk to raise money for the upkeep of the hall – see below.

Sponsored Walk

The Memorial Hall was first built in 1925 by the villagers of Bugthorpe in memory of those who had served in the First World War. Over the years it has provided a meeting place for many occasions and continues to be used for parties, polling and many village events.

To ensure the hall is kept in excellent condition, a sponsored walk is being held on 7th August 2021 to raise money for the replacement of the distinctive circular windows in the gable ends and other maintenance projects including replacement toilet flooring.

This is to be a fourteen mile circular walk visiting each of the Garrowby villages. Starting from Bugthorpe, walkers will then visit Kirby Underdale, Bishop Wilton, Full Sutton, and Skirpenbeck before returning to Bugthorpe Village Hall.

How to participate

1) If you would like to walk and collect sponsors for Bugthorpe War Memorial Institute, please collect a sponsor form from Bob at the Post Office or email Janet Wardell at jmwardell163@gmail.com for a form and further details.

2) You may walk without collecting sponsors by giving a donation of £10 to the Institute but be able to enjoy the challenge of walking fourteen miles whilst receiving support along the way – route provided, no chance of getting lost!

3) Sponsor a member of the committee to complete the walk thereby contributing to the upkeep of this valuable community resource – see Bob Crow at the Post Office

4) Take part in the smaller village walk

5) Join us for refreshments and a get together at 4 00 pm on Saturday 7th August at the village hall

THANK YOU for your support!

The Birds and the Bees

As you will know we recently started a project to help the birds and the bees of Bugthorpe village.

In the end we sold an amazing 45 boxes (with no profit) - lucky birds!!

The seed and plant sales also did really well, raising £70. This money will go towards the costs of the website, meaning we can continue to bring you the latest news and exciting updates!

We hope your seeds/wild flowers are doing well despite the difficult weather this spring and we would love to hear if anyone's bird boxes have any occupants!
