14th Keystone Coldwater Heritage Partnership Conference

February 28-29, 2020 | Ramada Inn Conference Center, State College

The Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited will host the 14th Keystone Coldwater Conference, February 28-29, 2020 at the Ramada Inn Conference Center in State College, Pennsylvania. The conference is an opportunity for grassroots conservation organizations, environmental professionals, college faculty, staff, and students to share ideas, concepts, and network in order to protect, conserve and restore Pennsylvania's coldwater resources.

PVCA will be sponsoring at the "Brown Trout" level as well as staffing an exhibit on the "Muddy Creek Stream Restoration Project 2012-2020" in partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Pennsylvania Field Office. PVCA has submitted a Coldwater Heritage grant application matching PVCA' s allocation of Annenberg Foundation 2019 grant supporting stream restoration this summer at Muddy Creek. The 2020 grants will also be announced at the conference.

Committee Corner:

Environmental Education Committee

Mission

Enhance education through place-based and experiential learning activities. These activities include field experiences, walking tours, restoration projects, in formal and informal settings.  We also connect with other organizations to provide well-rounded experiences.

Perspective

The Education Committee believes that any encounter with nature is a learning opportunity in which everybody has something to learn as well as something to teach.  While our primary focus is on kindergarten through twelfth-grade student education projects in the Penns Valley Schools, the Education Committee also works to connect the Penns Valley community to their landscape and waterways.  With the aid of PVCA Board Committees to amplify the educational components of the projects, the Education Committee provides interesting experiences for the whole community as well as supports independent conservation projects throughout the Valley.

Activities

The Education Committee is active and energized, which is good because everything PVCA does is educational. This year the Environmental Education Committee is working to strengthen ties and programming at the Penns Valley Learning Garden, Muddy Paws Marsh, Mountainside Homestead, Penns Valley Environmental Center and other environmental education centers. Our top priority is to support our Environmental Educator, Jim Flanagan.  Committee members have also created quite a list of potential projects including:

  • Incorporate climate change science in lessons
  • Re-establishing one or more School Gardens
  • Revive the Environmental Center behind the PV Elementary School
  • Work with PVHS students
  • Teacher Training
  • Partnering with other local non-profits

The Environmental Education Committee is also developing the educational components for PVCA sponsored events such as Crickfest. This Committee meets monthly.

Partners

We partner with other conservation and environmentally-oriented organizations in the area including Muddy Paws, The Learning Garden, and ChicoryLane Farm.
