Pedestrian Safety

The Village of Belgium does not have sidewalks on all village streets which can pose some challenges for walkers and joggers.  Please be sure to follow all laws and safety guidelines when walking or running on Village of Belgium streets, including Main Street bike lanes.

Wisconsin Statue §346.28 (1) requires that any pedestrian traveling along and upon a highway other than upon a sidewalk shall travel on and along the left side of the highway and upon meeting a vehicle shall, if practicable, move to the extreme outer limit of the traveled portion of the highway.

Safety guidelines and tips:

  • Stay on sidewalks whenever possible. If a sidewalk is not available, be sure to walk on the far side of the road facing traffic
  • Don’t wear headphones. Your ears will tell you much of what is happening around you
  • When walking at night, wear reflective clothing, shoes, or lights to make yourself more visible
  • Use crosswalks when possible, yield to drivers when crossing a road where there is no intersection or crosswalk
