Welcome to the latest GeorgeBaxter.com newsletter keeping you up to date on new research, discoveries or just (what I feel is) interesting information regarding George Baxter, Mid Victorian colour printing and all related subjects.

It's been a few months since the last newsletter but anyone I 'know' will realise that as soon as the good weather arrives my time is taken up working on our smallholding so I look forward to the winter months when I can spend more time writing up my research and also loading new sale stock to the site. I started that task a couple of weeks ago and even now there is a lot of new items with so much more to go - as normal I won't have to time to load anywhere near the items I would like to - some rare items are in the pile - Advice on the car of the teeth in Saunders book - Vah Ta Ha, very hard to find in the book - Ordinance of Baptism, The Wreck, all the prints from the History of the Orders of Knighthood...the list goes on and yes a copy of the Map of the Victories of Napoleon, there can only be under ten copies known...please keep looking at the site or contact me direct. I hope you enjoy the newsletter - Mic

Baxter or a Le Blond reprint?

Can you tell the differences between the printings? Have you purchased a Baxter when in fact it is a reprint by Le Blond from 1868?

Follow my continuing article on the 'easy' ways to tell the differences between these printings - The Bride and Duke Of Wellington (with arm) just added.

Read - Baxter or Le Blond Baxter - How can you tell the Difference?

Baxter prints on porcelain - Baxter, and even Le Blond prints being used on contemporary porcelain is not uncommon but a whole unknown series on Sarreguemine plates had never been recorded before

I am currently researching many different aspects related to Baxter prints  - some I need help on and have just added to the website such as An unknown Baxter painting - Pilgrims Progress - Book of Family Worship both with Baxter wood engravings? Hanna Rahmn and the Missionary Vine

Baxter prints weren't just popular in the UK, in the 1850's dealers were advertising Baxter's works even in places like Madras, India -  Baxter's (until recently) unknown 'agents' in Germany boasted “prints in stock within two days of their publication in London”

In the last Newsletter we had two articles about Joseph Mansell and his valentine cards, something that he is more well-known for than his colour printing perhaps.

In the article, and referenced to Ruth Lee's book 'History of Valentines', it was mentioned that no one had seen a Mansell colour print on a Mansell lace paper valentine.

Since then I have been shown a number of examples, rare perhaps but not unheard of. I show above an example with Mansell's print 'Little Boy Blue' on the front of the card and 'Mansell' embossed to the left hand side of the card. Our Chat has now been updated!

We have added a couple of interesting items to our 'Chat' Baxter needle box prints which covers any aspect where Baxter (or his Licensees) prints were used on sewing related items - Unusual Pin Cushions and a 'roll' type needle case added

See them here..

We have started to enlarge our 'About prints' section which I see as trying to bring all the known information about a print into one place, basically the same principle as we have for the rest of the website. We have just added

Read about Australia - News from Home

Australia - News from Home including details about the original painting and also the rare version with trees though the doorway and of course we paired that with it's companion News from Australia

Australia

Everyone in the world must be aware of the devastation the Australian bush fires are causing. Baxter's son emigrated there in the late 1800's, gave painting lessons and sold his fathers prints from a shop in Sydney.

There has always been a great interest in Baxter's work there and a number of unique items have come to light most probably taken there by his son.

We have friends of GeorgeBaxter.com all over Australia and sincerely hope that all are safe and well
