Two Types of Interview:

In my experience of being on both sides of the interview table, I've noticed two types of interview. One is the Check-list type of interview, where the interviewer(s) has a list of questions to ask, which they may need to report on, thus resulting in them taking notes during your interview.

The other type of interview is more like a conversation, where the interviewer(s) asks follow-up questions related to your answers, organically following the flow of the conversation. In my personal experience, I have always preferred the conversation-type of interviews. But how can you prepare for both types of interview?

How to succeed during either style of interview:

  • Keep your answers short and to the point. Be sure to answer the question in less than a minute, allowing for either a follow-up or clarifying question.

  • Think and answer in bullet form, listing important points to each question.

  • Keep examples or stories succinct and related to the question, without unnecessary details (dates, places, people's names, etc).

  • Subtly mimic their body language: are their hands folded and still, or moving while they talk; are their arms or legs crossed, or are they sitting in an open stance; are they learning forward or back?

  • If you notice that your interviewer is not asking any further questions, you may start to elaborate your answers to ensure you are giving them enough information each time.

  • Speak slow enough to allow them time to take notes.

  • If however the interviewer is asking follow-up or clarifying questions, continue to keep your answers short. You can discern their interest by how often and what kind of questions they ask.

  • Prepare to have a few questions for the interviewer at the end of your interview.
