TONTO CREEK IS RAGING!
In 2022 Christopher Creek received 29 inches of moisture and 38 inches of snow. In 2023 Jan 1 through March 23, 2023, Christopher Creek has received 100 inches of snow with 19 1/2 inches of moisture. So it is no wonder why Tonto Creek is Raging.
Tonto Creek is a year round stream with a considerable water flow that has formed a deep, remote and often narrow canyon below the Mogollon Rim in central Arizona. For 30 miles it snakes through the steep hilly land at the north edge of the Tonto National Forest, starting right beneath the Rim at an elevation of 6,600 feet. Here the rocks are sedimentary, the surroundings densely wooded and the canyon quite shallow but the character soon changes as the creek flows south into a particularly rugged area known as the Hellsgate Wilderness. Sometime after April 3, 1935, Bob Kiser rode over to the Bowman's place and hollered, "Birdie May had a baby girl and they named her Sally Ann! This was the Bowman's introduction to me; it would be a little while before I would come to know them. Bill Bowman told me this story dozens of times over the years. I thought it was really great, because NO ONE called my mother Birdie May -- she had given up that name when she left the hills of east Tennessee: she had become Betty or Bee. Still. Uncle Bob would call her that when he got excited. In any case, that led to a lifetime of memories and stories of the Bowman family whom I loved as my own. |
