Brisbane Writers Festival: "Outside the Frame" and Signing:

In about 10 days I'll be a guest of the upcoming Brisbane Writers Festival; basically, part of the panel "Outside the Frame" with other comic book writers/creators talking about about their work and process (Lauren Boyle, Jessica Walton,  Alyssa Mason (no relation), and chaired by Nova Blakley). This will be held at the  Brisbane Square Library in the CBD as part of their LOVE YA program of Free panels related to young adult fiction, Saturday 7th May at 1:30 - 2:30pm, followed by a comic book signing at 3:45pm. Info and free ticket registration via the link below if you're in town and interested:

FLOCK #1 Update:

An update just went out last night to backers in relation to the comic book on the Kickstarter website, just giving info on where production is at with the stretch goal expansion of the issue, as well as info in relation to future distribution of the books ... More soon, news for backers first. Surveys will be sent this week, so stay tuned to email inboxes if you were someone who pre-ordered the comic.

Brisbane Homegrown OZ Comic-Con recap:

Cheers for those that came by the table; was the first show since 2019 and thanks to the efforts of those who supported the kickstarter, I was pretty relaxed about going to the show and moving some issues for Frew and Gestalt. Was nice to see old faces and new, and a surprising number of young kids who are reading the Vietnam War-based Phantom stories. Cheers to my friend Jamie Johnson for catching up and being a good neighbour. Though I've dialled back my appearances at certain shows for various reasons, I'm happy to support the inclusive and friendly nature of this show and though I very much miss the OG shows, I look forward to supporting these again down the track if it crosses my path again.

The Masked Marvel Returns...:

Supported by a recent Phantom comic letters reply by Frew publisher Dudley Hogarth, Frew have informed me fairly recently that my sequel followup to the 1948 Phantom comic strip daily story "The Masked Marvel" by Lee Falk and Wilson McCoy, will be published within 6 or so issues.

As previously newsletters have alluded to, I wrote, drew and coloured the 24 page story, with assistant edits by Amanda Bacchi, and edited by Glenn Ford. This will be accompanied by some extra writing; a fun assignment to wrap up a fun story.

More soon.

L: GrandMaster Jamie Moore 9th, Me 5th, Master Gary King 7th after ITF Taekwon-do Grading.
R: Sabum Connor Nicholls and I at WKA Kickboxing Seminar.

Final words for April:

In a nutshell:

  • TX! Mag #39 has dropped online via  Hepatitis NSW/NSW Ministry of Health. Tried something a little different for the look for the 8 page story; I don't know if I'd do it again but a fun experiment nevertheless. Page 8 (pre-lettered) appears above, based on a script by Charlie Foster.

  • The greenlit films from recent Griffith Film School animation 3rd year student pitches have been announced, and I look forward to helping the cohort complete their pre-production packs for the end of the trimester in 7-8 weeks. Always exciting to see a film start as a few sentences in a student pitch, to the final product in October/November.

  • Miraculously, I survived my 5th degree Black Belt grading. The issue was the worrying lack of memory retention due to the overwhelming to-do list at the time,  and hip injuries. But a huge thanks to KJN Bret Nicholls, Sabum Connor Nicholls of TKD North Lakes/Burpengary, Master Gerhard Hedja of Ipswich TKD and my brother and longtime best mate Master Gary King, and Master Burn assessing things the night before, for faith and helping me prep in the week leading up to the stressful day. At one point I though I knocked a tooth out of a quick sparring round opponent, but turns out it was a plate, so I was very relieved after being momentarily mortified. Overall, it was great to see old friends and training companions all part of Worldwide Taekwon-do/Authentic Taekwon-Do under Grandmaster Jamie Moore, alongside Master Neville Burn and Master Jim Fletcher. The next day was much easier, albeit sore and tired from previous day, but a day at our Kickboxing seminar run by GM Moore; was a pleasure to assist Grandmaster Gary King (WKA).

Love to Amanda, who is still marching on each day, and recovering, despite the added caveat of Covid. She makes me very proud in her efforts. A reminder for us to keep punching on.

Love to you and your families, and thank you always for your support.

In this week in particular too, Lest We Forget.

Warm regards,

Paul.
