ʻO KE ALOHA KAI ʻOI AʻE

ALOHA IN ACTION

A few weeks ago my family and I were down in Miloliʻi and walked for a while along the shore before finding a small tidepool for the kids to play in. My 5-year old, Sam, took his tabis off to play in the sand and when it was time to walk back he decided to go barefoot. Within a couple minutes the sandy shore disappeared and we carefully walked and hopped across a jagged lava field. Sam was having a hard time keeping up and we often stopped so he could keep up. With sore feet, he turned to his sister and said, "Alana - can I have one of your slippers?"

Without hesitation, she gave Sam a slipper.

I watched them both carefully and tenderly walk across the rocks, one slipper each, and I thought about our Grounding Statement, "We value aloha and we demonstrate this by our willingness to suffer a little so that no one has to suffer a lot."

I've joked and said that the new test of aloha will be, "Babe, if we were walking in a lava field and I asked you for one slipper, would you give it to me?"

Aloha is a powerful energy that elicits an aloha response. When I witnessed the aloha between Alana and Sam, I was moved to give my slippers to Alana. Now she and Sam walked a bit faster across the rocks. Within moments, Darryl looked back at the three of us, told Sam to give Alana her slippers and Alana to give me back mine. He picked Sam up and carried him the rest of the way to the car. There is so much deep metaphor about community, compassion, generosity, everyone doing what they can to kōkua "the least of our brothers" in those ripple effects - but I want you to get through the rest of the newsletter so I'll let you ponder the deeper lessons on your own.

I was so moved by Alana's generosity and compassion, yes, but what stood out to the the most was her humility. Haʻahaʻa. She extended her gift and never once mentioned it. She didn't seize the teachable moment to point out why Sam should've kept his tabis on or how he should remember to pack his own slippers the next time. She just slowly walked with him - with just one slipper.

In her book Emergent Strategy, Adrienne Maree Brown writes, "being soft in your rightness, as opposed to smashing people with your brilliance, can open others up to whatever wisdom you've accumulated."

Be full of aloha and #vibehi,

Janice

SPOTLIGHT: PĀHALA RESILIENCE HUB

BUILDING FOOD SECURITY AND ECONOMIC RESILIENCE

"The Manaʻolana Lilikoʻi Butter is made by Amelia Uribe-Bounos who is in the 11th grade at Kaʻū High School. She personally delivered each of her lilikoʻi butters to families in Pāhala during our food distribution. The following week, we received handcrafted chili pepper water made by Kumu Aina's Culinary Class. The description on the back is really wonderful. We also received almond cookies made by Kaʻū High School student Kelson Gallano. The recipe came from his grandmother Fely Villegas."
