Nu Month News

Hi Friends,

Hope you've been hydrating and staying cool on these hot, humid days. I've been enjoying these glorious summer days in the woods as much as possible. What have you been doing?

August has a few National Days I can relate to and enjoy such as Watermelon Day (August 3), Zucchini Day (August 8), Left Hander's Day (August 13), Relaxation Day (August 15), Hug Your Sweetheart Day (August 23), and Eat Outside Day (August 31).

Recipe of the Month

Got Zucchini?

With the hot weather this summer my garden is producing a lot of zucchini, basil, and tomatoes. They are featured in this month's quick (under 20 minutes) meal.

There are also other terrific recipes from last year on my website. Check them out here.

Watermelon

There's nothing quite like a cold, juicy watermelon on a hot day! I love it for rehydrating and cooling after a hike or bike ride. Watermelon has many health benefits, including:

  • Heart health: contains lycopene and citrulline which help lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

  • Eye health: contains vitamin A, beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and anthocyanins to protect the eyes and support vision.

  • Skin: lycopene can block UV light and help prevent or repair DNA damage from sun exposure. This doesn't mean you shouldn't cover up and wear a a high quality mineral sunscreen.

  • Digestion: is high in fiber and water.

  • Immune system: rich in vitamin C, which can help strengthen the immune system.

  • Post-Exercise Soreness: contains potassium, which can help prevent muscle cramps and is a good post-workout hydrator.

  • Anti-inflammatory: contains antioxidants, lycopene, and vitamin C to fight inflammation and oxidative damage.

  • Weight loss: is low in calories and high in water, which can help you feel full longer, satisfy your sweet tooth, and may aid in weight loss.

  • Anticancer: contains lycopene, which may help protect DNA from damage, and has antiproliferative properties.

Relaxation Day: August 15th

Summer is busy with work, activities, social events, family outings, and more. Don't forget to take time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate.

Certain foods also regulate stress and mood. Some of my favorites are cold water fatty fish, berries, darky leafy greens, nuts/seeds, and dark chocolate.

Summer is the perfect time to make some healthy, sustainable changes for supporting good health and longevity.

Food is only a piece of overall wellness. As a functional nutritionist, I also consider and incorporate movement/exercise, sleep, stress, social connections, and more into your protocols.
