OUR FIRST NEWSLETTER & A HUGE THANK YOU!

Hi Folks,

Summer storms are breaking up our hot days with booming thunder and pouring rain! As the monsoon approaches, we're reflecting on the completion of our first whole year - through all seasons - and feeling so much gratitude to all of you that have supported us!

We're turning over the garden beds and layering them with gober (cow dung), fallen leaves and our crop biomass, knowing that the mighty monsoon will transform this inert material into rich, earthworm-filled humus come September. Less time in the farm means more time revving up our website, this newsletter and hosting lots of 'Radical Self-Reliance' themed online workshops.

This is our first newsletter :) You are receiving it as a huge thank for your participation in The Odd Gumnut community! Future newsletters will arrive monthly with tips and resources for empowered, down to earth, sustainable living - in the kitchen, the household and the garden. Up next month: seed saving guides & garlic brined okra!

With gratitude as bountiful as our summer basil crop,

Laura and Kunal Khanna

WE WORKED OUR BOOTIES OFF THIS FIRST YEAR. Here's the highlight reel:

We proved you can build soil anywhere! Using 'sheet mulching' we converted a barren 1/4 acre (our zone 1) into fertile beds for intensive vegetable cultivation in half a year's time.

We changed our lives by building a DIY 'rocket oven' - a 100% smokeless oven that runs hot on only kindling & sticks. Build with upcycled steel barrels, bricks and cob (sand+clay+straw).

We built our own sh*t castle! This dry system 'composting toilet' turns our human waste into valuable fruit tree fertilizer and eliminates thousands of litres of wasted water for toilet flushing. Each deposit is followed by a couple scoops of sawdust. It's odorless! We're thrilled.

We co-founded an organic farmers' market with Panchgani legend Mona Patrao! With the weekly Redstone Organic Market, we aim to prove that folks do value organic and use this proof to shift more local farmers away from harmful chemical agriculture. Markets are currently on hold due to Covid.

We learned to pivot. Covid-19 ended all tourism in Panchgani, tanking business. We moved 7 workshops online, ranging in topics from brewing kombucha to exploring the circular economy (on tomorrow @ 3:30 IST!).

You legend, you read all the way through! As a thank you, here is the link to one of Kunal's infamously curated groovy sets. We boogie to this while wood working or massaging cabbage for sauerkraut or pulling up weeds!

Peace, love and vegetables, folks! We hope you send this around to other earthly-minded people so they can sign up to receive hot-off-the-press practical knowledge each month.

Permaculture & sustainable living tips served up monthly!
