Dear All,

Welcome to a fresh new year!

Our committee has been very busy and we have a LOT of events coming up - We hope to see you there!

Politics in the Pub with guest speaker Dr Ann Capling!

Political Scientist Dr Ann Capling came out of retirement to lead a grassroots movement of radical trust, which against all odds, saw Independent candidate, Dr Monique Ryan unseat the sitting Federal Treasurer in the electorate of Kooyong.

We are honoured to have Ann join us for a Politics at the Pub event to talk about Kooyong's rise to success in achieving better Federal representation.

Ann will share her expertise and views on how a community independent campaign could be successfully coordinated for the regional electorate of Monash.

We invite all attendees to join us for dinner afterward to continue the conversation.

Event details:

Date: Wednesday 14th February 2024

Time: 6pm to 7.30pm

Kitchen Table Conversations

Do you want to have a say in informing candidates of the issues important to the people of Monash at the next Federal Election?

Then please host a Kitchen Table Conversation!

Kitchen Table Conversations (KTCs) are an important way that you can help Voices for Monash collect information about issues and ideas from the community which are then passed on to our electorate’s Federal representative. By gathering friends, family members, and colleagues together in a KTC, you are also providing a constructive forum which encourages greater engagement of the community in politics – and we can certainly do with more of this!

Key ingredients of a KTC:

  • A host

  • Between 4 and 9 (although this is flexible) friends, family members, neighbours or colleagues

  • A kitchen table (or other location that you think would work well for your group to chat - this could be a cafe, pub or community centre)

  • A scribe (someone to keep notes – it’s hard to host and scribe at the same time!)

A Voices for Monash Committee Member will come along to support you to facilitate the conversation and explain the work of the group. We can also be the scribe so that everyone else can focus on the discussion.

If the conversation is flowing, a KTC could take up to two hours which some people will like to know in advance.

So that consistent information can be collated across groups, question prompts are provided for the host to follow. They cover three themes: Living in the Monash community, political representation, issues and concerns.

If you are interested in hosting a KTC or would like to find out more, please click here, and one of our team will be in touch!

We hope you'll be part of this movement to ‘do politics differently’.

Have you joined our Facebook discussion group?

If you are a member, no doubt you are already engaged and passionate about doing democracy differently!

We have created a private Facebook group for members to connect, chat and debate political issues, whether it be on a local, state or federal level.

This groups provides a safe space for political discussion, away from the trolls of the public realm!

Connect with like-minded people, and together, we may well come up with some innovative solutions to our current state of democracy!

We pay our respects to the elders of these lands, past and present, and acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded.
