🪴 Linda's Letter 🔭

Happy New Year! Linda's Lab is now officially a 501(c)(3) nonprofit! I am so excited to build this organization into a powerhouse for science education. This important step will allow me to have a bigger impact with the money I get through Linda's Lab sales and donations.

Last month I was on FOX Weather with Britta Merwin, talking about the importance of neurodiversity. When we use brains that work differently to solve problems, we find better solutions in less time. Neurodiversity should be welcome everywhere! I was super nervous about my first LIVE interview. I had the flu and a double ear infection that day, but nothing can slow me down when it comes to science communication!

In December I visited four public schools and spoke to nearly 2000 students about science! These events cover the Scientific Method, conservation, carbon emissions, and using teamwork to solve problems. Darwin is always the star of the show, and we love encouraging kids to dream big and do hard things!

As a scientist, I am really proud to say I am a 2024 National STEM Challenge Finalist! If I'm chosen as a National STEM Champion, I'll be presenting my research at the National STEM Festival in Washington DC. Wish me luck!

Be brave and dream big!

What can YOU do

to reduce your carbon footprint?

USE SOLAR PANELS!

Solar panels are a great way to collect energy without harming the environment! You can save more than $1000 per year on your energy bills by using solar panels. And that's not all! You'll no longer be affected by blackouts and your home will increase in value! Solar power does require an initial investment, but it can save you money in the long run and improve your carbon footprint. You can make a difference!

🐢 Turtle Talk 🐢

The Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle

Beaches are beautiful but also support many animals, including sea turtles! The Kemp's Ridley sea turtle is a particularly fascinating species. Unfortunately, they are the world's most endangered type of sea turtle. Their species is in danger because their eggs and hatchlings are hunted by feral pigs, coyotes, raccoons, birds, and crabs. They are primarily found in the Gulf of Mexico but are also found in the Atlantic Ocean. According to NOAA, we can help these turtles in several ways:

protect nesting and foraging habitats

reduce bycatch in fisheries

keep our oceans clear of dangerous debris

Honey bees are very important to our ecosystem. In fact, honey bees are crucial to our survival. Without them, life on Earth would not exist. Without bees to pollinate them, flowers, and fruits and vegetables could no longer grow. And what about that delicious honey we love? Gone! Even our chocolate would disappear!

Some people have a fear of bees called melissophobia or apiphobia. But did you know honey bees are actually more afraid of you than you are of them? Honey bees only sting you if their hive is threatened. Honey bees are truly small but mighty!

📚 Puzzle Time! 🧩

Are puzzles good for your BRAIN? Yes! Doing a puzzle helps your brain work faster and improves your short term memory. It reinforces connections between your brain cells!
