The Kailee Mills Foundation informs the public on the importance of seat belt use while encouraging and inspiring communities to protect themselves and their passengers by always wearing their seat belts. |
We all know seat belts save lives. But did you know that you have to wear it properly in order to benefit from putting it on? Wearing your seat belt improperly can cause just as much damage as not wearing one. Drivers and passengers take for granted how powerful the simple act of buckling in correctly can be. After asking everyone in the vehicle if they have their seat belts on, glance around and make sure to keep an eye out for bad habits. Children especially think if the seat belt is buckled, they are wearing it, even if it's not done right. The right way to wear a seat belt is to have the shoulder strap pulled over your shoulder and across your chest with the belt up close against the body, not rubbing your neck. The lap belt should also be close against the body and low on the hips. Think about your anatomy for a second. This allows both the chest and pelvis to take most of the force of a collision with even distribution of force rather than other body parts, which might be less able to withstand an impact. |

Here is a great story and reminder from one of our readers, Bonny Wunderlich Yokely: "I'll admit that while I have always required my kids and their friends to buckle up, I would just tell them to after they climbed in my car and not check to make sure those in the backseat listened. Since you began Kailee's foundation, I refuse to drive until everyone buckles up even if it's just a two-mile drive within our neighborhood. I also remind them of the importance of it, and even though my children did not know Kailee before she passed, they know her story now. Just a few days ago, my 16-year-old son was in a car accident when he lost control due to the rain and crashed into a fence. He and his friend were fine because they both had on their seat belts. I honestly don't know if they would have been wearing them if it weren't for your campaign, so thank you. Kailee's legacy will continue to touch lives and protect them." |

What a great story and message, Bonny! Thank you for sharing this, and we are so glad your son and his friend were wearing their seat belt and are ok. #BuckleUp4Kailee |

"My name is Diana Davis, and I knew Kailee through our church youth group. Some of my favorite memories with her were at weekly Bible Study. We spent a lot of time laughing, talking about each other's lives, and poking fun at each other. Kailee made an impact on my life because she showed me how to focus on the present and that it was ok to let loose and be silly a little...or a lot of the time. My favorite picture of the two of us was from a youth group event at our church where we “borrowed” one of the adult’s phones and took a bunch of pictures on it…you can tell by our faces that we were pretty pleased with ourselves. |

Losing Kailee put my own goals and dreams more into perspective for me. It helped me to live more in the present and make sure I’m doing what I love and making a difference now as opposed to in a future that is not guaranteed. Kailee and I had many conversations about how she wanted to eventually go to college for something in the medical field. I have always wanted to become a nurse, and now I have even greater motivation to do so. I want to eventually use my knowledge as an RN and be an advocate for seat belt and car seat safety to better educate my community on the issue and keep her passion for the healthcare field alive in me. I want to do this for Kailee because I know she would’ve done for someone else." |

Thank you, Diana, for sharing your story with us! Always keep that passion alive and never forget the lessons Kailee left you. |
